Coming home from a friends house late last night all alone on the road in BigRed - Top down of course on a nice night - I spy a car in the rearview hustling to catch up (Im doing a liesurely 55 in a 55 mph zone) ... so being the good samaritan I am, I slow a bit so he can catch up :Brow:

Turns out to be a very nice looking 2001 or 2002 Trans Am with a healthy sound to it - he passes me on the left and slows to match my speed about 2 cars ahead. As luck would have it the lite we're approaching turns red.

I look over and see a youngish (late 20's ??) guy admiring my ride with his girl sitting shotgun - he leans forward and says "Man, your car is SWEET !!" ... I comment on how nice his burnt orange paint job looks

"....Thanks !! I just got it sprayed finally after 2 years of working on the motor and mechanicals" - Really ?? Whats in it ??

"Ohh !! A bored and stroked LS1 with a BlahBlahBlah Heads/Cam/etc - what are you running a 455 ??"

Yep - just your average 37 year old Buick Motor - but YOUR car must be FAST with all that work done to it ..."Yeah !! its alot faster than I was even hoping for. Do you want to go ??"

You mean race each other ?? Ohhh....I dont know about that especially with all that work you've done to it. She says "Come on, it'll be fun and He'll take it easy on you" with him finishing with "Yeah ... we'll go together when the lite turns green, OK ??"

Well, if you insist I think to myself as I nod o No:

I ran her hard through first and second shifting into third just shy of the 6,000rpm rev limiter and slowed for the approaching red lite up a ways ...where I sat and waited ... and waited ... and waited ou: until finally he showed up.

They both looked over with that Deer-in-the-headlights glazed over look plastered on their faces and then he just started Laughing and Laughing uzzled: which kinda pissed me off at first until he said "Holy S$!T ... my buddy/engine builder told me Dont EVER mess with those BUICKS - NOW I know what he was talking about !! Man, your car sounded SWEEEEET !!!" :TU:

I just smiled and said "Thanks - How badly did I pull away from you ??"

"Embarassing ...Man, just TOTALLY Embarrasing. Im going to have to buy that NAWSS system he was telling me about now - Hey, Do you want to go again ??"

No thanks - I dont want to beat up on my old motor too badly :bla::boring:

Actually he was very cool about the whole ordeal giving me MAJOR props and I left kinda feeling bad about the schooling I just gave him

....but SOMEONE's Gotta Do it o No: :beers2:

Try the same thing on the Autobahn over a distance of 100 KM, and I'm sure the Trans Am will beat your little Buick.....:spank:

A real race is about top speed, not about acceleration over a short distance :boring:

put a whoopin on the boy,thats what its all about.i love street racing,kinda dangerous out here,too many deer.but i did race a bmw in my 69 electra....spanked him hard.he tried to pass me....he didnt do it:bglasses: ou:big ol boat,doing 60 on the backhiway,i saw him trying to pass,punched it,tranny downshifted,q-jet was suckin air.he was door to door with me for a second or two,then.....well i was all alone again.i bet he crapped himself.

Eric, man, I'd rather try recovering from a bad move only going 50 or so that at over 120.........and where I come from, the race is over by the time you hit 50 or 60.

BTW........NICE KILL! I love seeing a Trans Am hero get whooped by a Buick! I'd have loved to have seen that. :laugh:

 

nice kill and it's awesome that he respected the power. Wonder who his machine shop was giving him the warning. I give the other guy tons of props for that, with that kind of thought process i wouldn't mind calling him a buick man.

talkin about the autobahn, I recall reading an article about a 70-72 gs that was built for the autobahn about 5 years ago, with upgraded cooling (oil, trans, water) along with diffrent gearing, maybe a 5 speed trans. i believe it was a brown car (don't know the GM name for the color) that thing would be scary coming up behind you in your BMW 5 series on the autobahn when your already doing 100mph.

 

What's a drag race all about then... Maybe you should be driving something other than American iron...

Nice kill !! Sounds like the guy was decent about it too........ that makes it fun knowing you don't have to put up with a ricer fly-by adter you beat them.

 

That's a good kill story!My LS-1 Formula has a very flat torque curve.It don't throw your head back,but once it gets going,it don't stop.

Yeah, and funny thing about that is there's quite a few folk in the world that love to take their Ferraris and Lambos there, I don't think a TransAm would hang around much in the autobahn either, especially when the speedo tops out at 150 on them and that's cruising speed for any legit and modern Lambo/Ferrari. It wouldn't be right to take any car there unless you have money hanging out your buttox.:bla:

 

If that's so, it sounds like he needs to make a phone call and get some of that HP that Alan has..

With 560 HP and 3.08 gearing, I wouldn't worry too much about anything catching me, on the highway, if I were in Alan's car.

I have driven cars with similar HP as his, and ones with more, and at 60mph when you nail it in high gear, and the TH400 detent downshifts, it's a hell of a ride.

Tim Hol's "project Regal" that we did with the prototype Level 2A motor, and 3.73 gears, would haze the tires and fishtail from a 50 MPH roll. I talked to the new owner of that car, and he says it's plenty "scary" with treaded tires on it.

If I lose I always smile and say "that car/motorcycle runs good". I mean what do I say to a someone who just beat my lowwww 11 sec T-Type. Fortunately it is rare.
