?

Should I get exhaust cut-outs or keep using oven-mitts to remove collectors manually?

  1. SO... I am looking to put some exhaust cut-outs on my GSX 455. I was thinking of a set of remote-controlled or electric cut-outs that I can open or shut from inside the car so I do not have to get under and I can still close them without having to wear oven mitts after I'm done letting her stretch her legs down the 8th.
In the past, I have unbolted the collectors and simply removing them altogether to run straight headers but we all know how quickly that can get unwanted attention from our friends with flashy lights and bad tempers. Likewise, I have also tried only bolting the collectors to the bottom bolt on the headers I am also aware of the manual cable drawn cut-outs.
Basically what I am saying is I am curious about what other people have done. I would love to get some brand names that tend to provide good results. Anything helps.

    Thanks.

Get an exhaust that flows well enough you don’t need to open up (like T/A’s mandrel bent 2 1/2” with Walker Dynomaxes).

Curious myself, I have a 2-1/2 system but when racing my convertible, all I can usually hear is the opponents car. It is very difficult to race off the tachometer only.

Buy the complete outfit and wear it at the track when you get ready to pull off the collector. When people ask you what your doing tell them your getting ready to cook hamburger helper.

Nothing wrong with making alot of noise on the track. As mentioned the more HP you're making the more radical it will sound. How fast is your car? What has been done to it? If you are not in the mid 12's or better then a 3" system is pretty much for show or the loud exhaust if that is what you want.

Did you have collector extensions on your headers when running them open? I have felt the difference and it is substantial down low. This probably is more important than anything when opening up your headers. Get collector extensions!

If you want to open it up on the street you're going to need the electrics but if they are too expensive you can get the regular manual dump tubes the same size as the header collector. You can always upgrade later to electrics. Weld the bolts onto the outlet and then use wingnuts to hold the cover plate on. With a pair of pliers you can open them up in two minutes. I'd add a collector extension before the dump and make sure the actual dump outlet is 15-18" away from the collector flange. Hook the regular outlet through a reducer to your current exhaust system. If you have the cutouts and run them open when you want the extra performance boost then it doesn't matter how the system flows after that.

Must see video. Maybe it will not be as great a difference because of the HP levevl but it is noticably there. The only way this doesn't make that much of a difference is if you have a stall converter 4000+ rpm and big gears. Maybe if you are running nitrous or blower.

  15. Right now it runs high 12's. I have collector extensions on it right now. I have decided to just go with some Walker Dynamax mufflers and just keep it like that. When I run it just header it tends to run lean and end up making less power unless I bring a screwdriver on me. If I end up adding a cut off it will be a manual plate cut off somewhere between the collectors and the mufflers. At that point, I would only be opening them up when I decide to take it to the track. In which case I will have the opportunity to adjust the carb.

How are you fixing a WOT lean condition with a screwdriver?
