For Those Who Can Not Do It On Race Day

I join the ranks of Jim S. The car can make a number just on the wrong day (Wednesday in our cases). Anyone else afflicted by this illness? Please let me know, maybe we can start group therapy together.

As the Judge suffered an electrical mallidy this weekend, Dan and I decided to do Wed. night test/tune at Stanton with it in healthier shape. Dan brought the W30 and ran personal bests on ET and MPH with it.

Track temp ranged from 82-75 degrees, preasure ranged from 29.62-29.64 with humidity ranging from 53-59%.

Off the trailer w/identical setup to weekend it went: 12.605 @ 112.65.

Swapped to the carb from the dyno session and went: 12.514 @ 113.57

    Juggled shift points and luanch rpm and ran these three in this order: 12.466 @ 113.96 - 12.442 @ 114.08 - 12.491 @ 113.72 (messed up 1-2 shift/had best short time) :af:

Dan had back to back runs at: 13.397 @ 101.77 and 13.356 @ 101.82. Both a car best.

I know I know. The Superbee contingent/COPO Camaro/L88 Vette guys are not in the least impressed. BUT I am positively beaming that a 400 cube, 4000+ lbs., 4spd car hit these numbers.

I want to thank Dan for all the tireless help over the last few months, Jim L., RDL and Gonzo for encouragement that a RA IV really can post decent numbers.

It still needs to improve its short time to really run. It still mph's much better than it ET's. I did cut about a tenth off the short times, and more than that in the 330 times from the old motor. Which is the majority of its improvement.

Looking forward to Martin. Maybe I can do it on the correct day with Jim next year.

And you should! Congrats. Impressive indeed. A car does not have to go low 12's to impress me. There are a lot of impressive cars out there. My son drove his Monte 5 hours to get there and peeled off a 13.86 once! Most were 14.0's, but we were shocked and happy to see those kind of #'s. How about Brians 13.0s.??? Impressive indeed for gramma's car! Lots of cars picking up each year. Congrats to all.

Congrads Mark on some really nice improvements on the Judge. Good to see that you got over that hump. I know you were stuck in the 12.80 range for the longest time. I bet you look forward to next year that much more! Now, what do you think if that motor was in the TA? What do ya think the TA would run? I know, wrong thread as you should continue this on your article thread. What do you think the thing would run and what do you know think compaired to the RA II?

    Hey Mark,

12.44 @114+ is fantastic! What electrical gremlims did you have? Ram Air IV's do have the power to post the numbers, it just takes some patience, time and skill to do it. I can't wait to see the motor back in the TA for next year...can you say 12.20's @ 116 mph?

Dan's W-30 ran really well for a 4000 lb car with 3.42 gears and a very stock rebuild not done by himself. Its a very mild mannered car with a bench seat and colume shift automatic for those who have not seen the car (red w/ black stripes, red steel wheels and button hubcaps).

I'm so bummed I couldn't make the event this year, but was glad to hear it was a record crowd despite the rain on friday.

Geez !! Mark you bettered my RAIV GTO times of 12.48 and that one has headers!! Ok back to the drawing board here :Dou:

Congrats again super job, I am so pumped up I am taking my RAIV Judge (w/no headers) out this weekend and next to try and do some more tuning, although I don't expect to be in your league of ET's.

I think in a Bird you would see .4 tenths better ET's as long as you clamp the front of that rear leaf! First Pure Stock Bird in the 11's ??

I can see it now. Pure stock motors being built by Jenkins, Warren Johnson, and Mark Weymouth! :eek2:

Congrats to both Mark and Dan on some great runs. Getting heavy cars to move off the line and fly down the track is an art form that I am still struggling with.

358 shopping days till the '06 PSMCDR. Better get those resto parts and motors out , time is 'awasting'! :Brow:

    Thanks Everyone

Pete I was joking about the Superbee/COPO/Vette comment. A better word would have been scared not impressed. Although if you are in front of me at the end of the run scared may be the exact word. Four wheel manual drum brakes do not expressly slow this 4000 lb. lump down very well. If I can not pass you on the track at least I can while using every last foot of the shut down lane after a 113+ mph pass.

Plus I should not include Jim in my weekend malidies. Jim nearly reached his Wednesday time over the weekend. As opposed to my best run which was 3 tenths quicker on Wednesday.

I am also endlessly amazed by how well all 131 cars go. Who would have thought 10 years ago we could have them running this well. I was surprised when that certian SS454 passed me just outside Chesaning while we were fueling the trucks back up. Your son drove all that way and first time out goes in the 13's. He must be amped.

I am with you guys on the bird. My '71 HO T/A weights about 300 lbs. less than the Judge. Add in an auto and it may really post some nice times. My '70 is actually a four speed, and I have mostly decided not to race it due to various factors.

Dennis we had alternator issues. Dave Hemker was GENEROUS in the extreme and had one of his guys bring me one in the morning. :beer Unfortunately it did not solve the issue. We (Dan) found it had numerous mistakes made during the rebuild rendering it useless also. Dan fixed them, and as I had to be over to Scott's on Wednesday we took a shot that it solved the problem and went test/tuning. Over the weekend we could not keep enough charge in the battery to fire the ignition cleanly so I benched the car.

The good thing about your car sitting at Dan's is things happen to get fixed! Thanks Dan.

Again thanks to Dave for the effort he gave to try and get me going when we found the alternator was cooked on Friday night. And thank you to all that gave me bump starts to try and get a few runs in.

    Waiting for Martin, Mark

Hey, as soon as I got home I opened up my Bass Master's catalog and ordered up one of these babies:

I just gotta keep the paperwork with me, so that no one thinks it's a electric fuel pump running......

    Hey Donny,

Before my computer locked up on me, I was going to ask what the RPO number was for a bilge pump on your bass boat! Or would that have been a COPO ordered option? :Dou:

RDL only if you promise to go faster than I can. I would be just as proud of any accomplishment even if it was only my motor involved. Casey does that make me a common engine whore?

Dennis is correct on Dan's W30 it is so mild you can barely hear it. When my car was idling it washed his car completely out and mine is not loud. I do have to take Dennis to task on the fact that Dan's car is actually not 4000 lbs, more like 3999.9987 lbs. It does make a difference. Maybe we can talk Dan into a motor rebuild. I would love to see a third '70 Olds run well into the 12's.

    To crib from RDL:

    Mark: Dan do a motor!

Dan: I have to much of your stuff around the house to finish.

    Dennis: Dan do a motor!

Dan: Since Mark asked yesterday I have more of his crap around.

    Mark
