I dunno the part number, but I bought it from a guy who had a friend who was second cousins with Zora Duntov, and he swears Zora gave it to him as a gift and told him they were original for the Grand Sport racers.......

    Congrats

Defan, I'll do the patting for you. That is a great time for a three fiddy.

Welcome to the fold of us pure stockers. Now if you are like me you will dedicate the better part of your life trying to go barely faster. I am 39 in a few months and our age group seems to be a bit addictive of personality.

See you at Martin going faster than 14.62 @ 94.

    rdl ...stocker 'n stocker

First there was Casey and his Pepe... then came Dave H and his thong... now we have Donny and some kinda' plastic pump device... my spider senses are tingling... I suspect something diabolical is a foot!

Mark:  Try and keep it together, okay? My 'bird is only about 50lbs lighter than your Goat (I'm about half as skilled as a driver) -- so records are not likely to fall on my watch.

39 seems to be the number

I'll be 39 myself on the 12th of November. If only I had gotten off my butt years ago I would of had the bugs worked out for the race :spank: Carbs are off and in Tom Cannons' hands. Will be nice to have all 6 barrels working.

    Mark,
Was great to meet you and put a face with the name.

Thanks John. It does feel good. Now only if I can do it on an appropriate day.

What was Paul able to finally pull off the RA IV GTO after he altered the luanch technique? I know he got at least one 12.90. Did he go any lower? What was the final MPH? I lost track of what it was running and have been dying to find out. I sure do like that car.

You have to feel good now about her as she is running hard.

Hey Mark, the best he ran was the 12.9 at 111.The 4.56 gear did not work well, went through the traps at 6500,the motor only pulls to 6000.I liked the close ratio trans better than the wide.He thought he could have got some 12.8,s with the "BURN THE CLUTCH" start! Hopefully,i can find a 4.33 ring and pinion to put in it,but i doubt that it will run with your Judge! For a certified 400 to run 12.3 with a 4000 pound car,and a 4-speed,is incredable.Just imagine if us Pontiac guys could run the cubes everyone else is :3gears: :)

I dunno.....'ol Sawruk seems to do pretty darn well with less cubes! :beer

And his Air Conditioning still works.... :TU:

That's right, Jeff runs faster than me, both of our A/C units work, and I have a hundred cubes more. Hey... that doesn't make me sound very fast! Damn you, Jeff!

    4.56's

John my experiment with an M20 did not work either. I improved the short times but lost 2mph in the end. It just could not pull the big drop on the 3-4 shift. Maybe the new motor could pull it off, but I am unlikely to try. I got my best short times ever on Wednesday and matched or beat the M20 with my last two out of four runs on Friday. I worked the 60 down to a best of 2.029. My best run came on a 2.053. Well below what the M21 used to get. I used to be happy with 2.1's.

I have the original 4.33 gears. They work nicely. Richmond will make you some if you ask nicely. They made 4.33's for my Challenger T/A. I think it only cost something ridiculous like 20 bucks extra.

I came through the traps with the 4.33's at an actual 6195 rpm on the 114.08 pass. The tach said 6200. So it must be off a bit.

My motor peaked at 5900 and 6000 depending on the dyno run. It would fall off less than 10 hp from peak to 6100. By 6200 it had droped another almost 20 hp each run. Once they go past 6000 they fall off pretty quickly. This makes me at the edge of my gear. I just do not believe the car would work as well with a 4.10. It is to heavy to get moving fast let alone with less gear. I have decided it is better to run over the top and get better short times than vice versa.

Mark, thanks for the advice,i never thought about asking richmond to make some gears,i think they used to make 4.33,s.I am gonna call them tomorrow :TU: Your 2.02 short is awesome,my 70TA,s best was 1.99,any time you can 60 foot your 4 speed car with an automatic car, then you are doing some fancy foot work!

I agree, at the begining of the year I installed 4.86's in the Merc to work on the short times. I spent a lot of time accelerating from launch rpm to the rpm where serious power is made. At 4267lbs it can be a long time.

Another thing I did was replace the sloppy original front shocks, because I felt the weight transfer was too fast, sometimes shocking the rear tires.

2.00, 1.99 and 1.97 are the best so far as I hone in on the launch stategy.

    .05 sec away from a 12.99! :beer

    Great Short Times Brian

My 2.02 was not a perfect luanch just the best I did. I doubt that there is anything less than a 1.98 in her though. So how in the world did you get the big Merc moving that quick!

I know you have more torque, a shorter first gear and stiffer rear axle ratio. But with all those lbs. and a four speed. You and your car never stop to amaze me.

Scott and I only combined for a series of 60 footers in the HO from 1.96 to 2.002 and my car is 500 lbs lighter than yours. Granted a 3.73 with a 2.20 first is not the best combo but the HO makes serious torque. And we both thought it was jumping out great for a 4spd. I am once again humbled by your Merc. You need to take it easy on me. I am losing confidence. :(

Yep, but that 500 lbs is hanging behind my rear axle, have you seen the trunk on that car?.....

Thanks for the good comments! :TU:

I can't wait to see what kind of short times Brian can pull with those truck gears, that kind of torque, clutch slip, and Casey going along for a free ride in the trunk! :Dou:

Geez, I have done a 1.86 60 foot, on BF Goodrich Radial T/A's.....and Tom Cannon keeps telling me I am losing ET's with radials. But its a heavy 4070 lbs with me in it. :ball:

Gonzo is that with an auto or a 4spd? Your conv. is about 40 heavier than my hard top. Darn '69's without side impact beams and huge nose.

I have BFG's on a couple cars and they are comparable. I have not done better one way or the other. They do work better on the street than bias ply's though.

My experience with Polyglas vs radials is that the Polyglas tires still pull pretty hard when you spin them a little, whereas the radials go up in smoke if you spin them at all.

I was pulling 1.90-1.95 60 footers last year with the M20 and the old small cam, but can't get it under 2.30's this year with either a big uncontrollable spin or a monster bog. Even after tightening up the wrap on the secondaries and trying all kinds of different launch techniques.??????

Lost the sweet spot with this car, hope to get it back next year....or run the 66 car. :Brow: :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:
