Re: 65 skylark 4spd shifter linkage

Anyone have a set of rods/linkage for a four speed shifter?
I have the shifter but don't have the rods.

    Thank you,

    Gary

Hi Joe, nice to hear from you again.

I did manage to find a shifter but the RODS are missing. I'm hoping i can somehow fab some rods up but i need to get the lengths etc.

The shifter is rusted a bit but i believe i can clean it up enough, using the washing soda and battery charger method...

    Thank you,

    Gary

No doubt Gary. Thanks for remembering those pesky grille emblem mounts. I have a guy who supposedly is going to make me a bunch of them in stainless.

I have my linkages in a box somewhere. Let me know if you come up empty with the info you need. I believe one of the 65 guys has a bunch of pics of everything.

Whats this battery charger method you speak of? Hmm?

    Hi Joe,

So you don't have a set of the RODS i could purchase off you?

I wasn't involved in any grille emblems but i was going to purchase a frame from you a time back.

The method i spoke of works like a charm. Just google "Rust removal using washing soda" and you'll see what i mean. I did a bunch of parts last fall and could not believe how nice they came out...and the rust never came back either.
    -washing soda (NOT baking soda)
    -water
    -12 volt car charger
-some scrap metal that the rust can be attracted to

I may be making a trip down your way in the next week or so. Maybe i could come by and see your projects/cars.

    Cheers,

    Gary

Absolutley stop in. Sorry for the emblem confusion, different Gary.

I only have the rods for the car i'm restoring. i will keep my ears open though. Plus i'm going to Yardley's Big Buick Bash(BBB), so i'll hit a few of the guys.

I still have the frame too. But it'll be going on evil bay soon.

    What are you buying now?

Picking up a a full (almost) 4spd setup for my 65 GS.
However no BW trans and no rods for the shifter.

If you find a set of rods i would be moocho interested.

    Thanks Joe,

    I'll ask around.
And I can't wait to see the battery charger method.

I did one time and another member laughed and said the barn is going to fall in on the car or something like that.

Didn't bother me though....i'm happier than a pig in **** to have this barn i'm renting out in the country. I live in the big bad city of Toronto and very hard to find a place to work on cars.

I'll post some pics tonight if i can.

    Cheers,

    Gary

if the shifter is gm and a bw tranny, i would think any belly button site would
have new rods and stuff. i imagine they are all the same. jim

    Thanks Jim,

I'm hoping to get a BW trans as correct as possible for my 65 skylark when i do i would like to have the correct setup. Seems the only pieces i'm missing are the trans and the shifter rods.

I don't mind getting after market if they made the rods correct enough although i doubt anyone has made them at all.

I believe with enough patience and time i will find them.

    Cheers,

    Gary

Try Dennis- he seems to come up with some good parts.

Dennis is a good source. He restores them, so they might be expensive.
Hurst should still have them avail if you want to go that way. There was a Car Craft artiicle in the past decade that had all the numbers. Think it was a 63 Impala shifter. I have numbers here somewhere if you are serious. About $350 new.

The 65 shifter bodies are pretty generic. I bought a 'vette one for $10 that was identical to my 65 GS. Some Impala handles are close to the GS ones. Not sure if rods are repo'd.

Hey guys...I concur with all the input re Dennis at DME.. Quite a few years ago, I purchased a completely restored 65 GS shifter with the 'reverse lift-lockout" mechanism and linkages from him..it is gorgeous and complete! SO, that being said, if you find someone with a mix of linkages that they cannot identify, I could take some pretty detailed pix of mine and perhaps you could use those pix as a reference? :Do No: Justa thot. :idea2: Wheelz, Tampa Bay

Guys...I will try to uncover the shifter and snap a few pix sometime this week. I've been real busy preparing a pretty-nice 65 Rivi GS for sale you will soon see "Cars for Sale" section. :TU: Wheelz, Tampa Bay
