If you have an external oil pump like Petersen system you could run more clearance. I run .003 an .0025 on Thumper. Some guys run .0035 and .003. I'm chicken.

Yeah, I want 70 at least at the front for 5500. Years ago (like 35yrs) I told machine shop I wanted to see see 80 at 6000 and they said it was way overkill. 2000 passes later......still kicking....

I understand the theory on the balance line, your pressurizing the main oil galley (right bank lifters also) from both ends to eliminate the pressure drop as the oil travels rearward.
My question does the pressure equalize at the rear to what its reading at the front (in this case 60 psi) or does it average out to say 54 lbs front and rear?
Im going to do this to my 350 when I install my aluminum heads, I have front and rear pressure gauges so I guess I'd find out:p

Its nearly the same, there is some frictional loss but for practical purposes its the same.

Lots of good info on the balance line in JW's thread,

This is how Jim set my engine up,

    470BearingClearances..jpg
I use Joe Gibbs HR-4 10W/30 Synthetic oil. The lowest in gear hot idle I have seen is right at 20 psi. That was after 1 hour at highway speeds on a 95* day.

Oil pressure taken from T at the back of the equalization line.

when assembling an engine cleanliness is essential.

Was this a premade kit or did you fab this up yourself Bob?

I made it myself. Bent the lines and bought the fittings.

Nice job..I am a little intimidated bending the U shaped one in the bell housing area though.

That is a beautiful job. My only concern would be how it sealed up and stayed that way. I know I have had lots of problems with the carburetor metal line where it goes into the carburetor filter housing. The AN fittings seal up easier and more reliably. The seal between a metal line flare and the seat has more to do with the quality of the flare and the seat. I am not saying that won't be as secure. From what I can see, I'm sure you did a great job with that.

they make annealed copper flare washers to go between the flare and the fitting if you're having trouble getting a line to seal. They work very well and are used quite frequently in refrigeration applications

I wouldn't mind doing this modification, but I'd steer toward braided AN line..

That's good to know, it acts like a gasket I'm guessing.

    Yes it does .
We have to use them on older hydraulic fittings on old woods equipment. Far higher fluid pressure than the Buick oil system.
No complaints with the washers yet. .
Bob set up looks great. I have one engine setup like yours and one with AN fittings and flex lines. Both work fine.

I bet they would work great when the original metal fuel line flare to seat seal becomes problematic.

It may not be the fastest but it will be pretty.

Use A good quality braided line and AN fittings, besides simplifying the job there’s less connections therefore less chance for leaks and another benefit to the AN fittings is they will flow better than the hardware store bought brass fittings.
