I was sitting at a red light earlier this week behind a convertible Firebird FireHawk. Next to him was a new style Chevy or GMC 3/4 ton diesel pickup. Honestly, I didn't pay much attention to it, pretty non-descript truck. I was busy explaining to my girlfriend that the FireHawk was a special edition thing built outside Pontiac, extra performance parts, blah, blah, blah....

The light went green and the truck jumped on it. Honestly, I don't think the guy in the FireHawk had a clue he was about to be in a race. But he reacted to the trucks launch and gave it all he had. It just wasn't enough! He managed to hold his distance, but he couldn't run down the diesel.

Chalk one up for current diesel technology!! Outside of LMAO at the guy in the FireHawk getting wasted with his ladies in the car, I was really impressed by that diesel. It ran quiet, barely threw any smoke, and obviously has the power to get the job done!!

My dad's friend has a diesel with one of those super chips in it. Breaks the tires loose @ 80mph. :jd:

Last night I was riding with my friend in his '01 Indy Pace Car Camaro, and one of those Firehawks pulled up to us at the stop light. I was just about to ask him, "What's a Firehawk?" when the light changes and the Firehawk makes a move, Camaro takes off......

Well, the back of that Firehawk looks pretty good.....

I got a good laugh. Ragged him for getting toasted by a Fire Chicken. :moonu: He said he wouldn't have even tried, didn't realize it was a Firehawk, would've known he'd get left in the dust.

Finally, I got a little :blast: back at him for making fun of "my grandma's Buick"!!!

To the credit of the Firehawk driver, when we got next to him again, he smiled and waved, very sportsman-like :beer

I've heard of only two vehicles that could do that.. one was do to lack of traction (A mustang, explains it all), and the other was scary. a Scout II, with 40" mud tires on it, but he had a 506 CID Hemi under the hood... :Do No:

It's one of those turbo diesels with one of those "******** that's a huge increase in power" chips. I figure on alot of people not believing me. It's not a dually either in case that helps the believability any. :Do No:]

I've seen a lot of crazy speed stuff for diesels that make them run unbeleivably fast for heavy trucks that only rev to 3500rpm. Breaking the tires loose at 80mph is a bit hard to swallow for any car or truck period and espically so with just a power commander, but is not impossible. I have seen a few diesel trucks with a propane injection system, chip, exhaust, and turbo upgrade that would put a few corvettes to shame, and could probably break the tires loose at highway speed, but not while in overdrive gear.

I've seen a Cummins Ram do some crazy things... The guy had all the tricks, some head work, huge by large turbo, and a chip. from a dead stop on dry pavement he floored it and all four rear tires went up in smoke, the truck was sideways. then he was gone. I don't know what was thicker, the tire smoke, or the black smoke.. It was very cool :3gears:

Jim Haas from the board used to own Buzilla...a Buick with a BBB monster stroker motor that would break the tires loose at over 70 mph. I think he has since sold the motor to Mike Garrison (Mr. Buick) :3gears:

  14. I think it's funny how much you see very large pickups showing people up both on the street and on the track. I'm sure everyone's seen the video of the guy running his diesel F350 in a 11.42 1/4, and I was just on another site with some pictures of a guy in a 1T CC Silverado running similar times. It's pretty impressive how fast some of those beasts can go!

    I belive it

I watch the show "TRUCKS" on spike T.V. and I have seen the guy do all sorts of things with a diesel..like using propane instead of nitrous and the tunning chips and a ton of other things that will make those motor lite up the hides at all sorts of speeds! I know it sounds crazy but just watch the show when he works on a diesel and you will be amased :jd:

That thing is quick but an enviornmental nightmare. The other car looked to be an rx7 which if properly tuned can be a stout performer, I don't see much to laugh it looks like he broke something just after the launch as the car seems to slow down and then accellerate slowly. Now I am as much a gear head as the next guy, but is there really a need for an 11 second diesel pickup? At that point you can't haul with it reliably and the mileage is certain to suck worse than the gas version, and for the cost of the truck plus speed parts you could probably have a g-body regal with a 455 running the same numbers, plus a sport bike or a bass boat or a......

Still pretty cool to watch, however.
