Worked in several diferent jobs through the 70's before spending the 80's in various Supervisor and Management positions for a Major Canadian Courier company which was also known for its filter division. When that job suddenly ended late one January Friday afternoon, I obtained my Commercial Driver's License and started doing city LTL work. Became a CDL Instructor for 9 years, teaching newbies how to safely operate a big rig both prior to them earning their CDL, then taking them on real road trips. Grew tired of that 15 years ago and became a full time Professional Freight Relocation Specialist. Retired from that gig last April 1st and now just do part time work one to four days/week. Some of the interesting places I've been to. This was a fun dock to get into! Chicago south side. One of our patriotic trailers. Another interesting delivery in Chicago. One of my proudest achievements, which occurred in 2013. I'm now over 1.6 million. Been to some cool places too. Narrowly missed dropping into this "pothole". Partial washout of Ontario's Hwy 17 October 26, 2012. There were several other much worse ones behind me which I'd driven over just before they occurred. Caused by torrential and nonseasonal rains. The Highway was closed for 3-4 weeks. On my way to a customer. I was stopped at a light for this photo. This was a real challenging dock in Minneapolis to get into! Unloading at a bee farm, They did all the work while I avoided getting stung!
More of my adventures over the road. Just another "annoying summer tourist" at a delivery north of Milwaukee. One of my most challenging deliveries ever, Minneapolis south side. Took about 20-25 minutes to blindside in, while avoiding the deep hole behind that fencing. Customer told me it couldn't be done. I said "hold my mug of tea". Must have got out and checked a dozen times! In their dock!! Ah the wide open prairie spaces! Tree Rock in Wyoming some 20 years ago. Bonneville Salt Flats Rest Area on westbound I-80 near Wendover, NV. Bridge over the Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls, ID. Almost lost my lunch first time crossing it as there's no warning. You're just on it. Pulling into the Donner Rest Area, I-80 west bound. A little fog in my future?? Thunder storm near Big Spring TX about 20 years ago. I was parked for the night. Learned thunderstorms really are bigger in Texas. I think this was the Fraser River in BC. My trainee was driving at the time.
Awesome thread! Nice to hear from people that are/were passionate about their work. I'm a welder, fabricator, sheet metal worker
Please tell us that is just water at the bottom of the steps.... I have to ask.....have you ever had to look in the mirror and say. "So help me, if I have to pull this bus over, I'll give you something to cry about!...?
I’ve worked in IT staffing/recruiting for the last 4 years. On the weekends I help my dad out at his auto repair shop. My grandfather opened it in 1953, and my dad took over in the late 80s. Still going strong all these years later.
I've been a court officer for 15 years this coming June. Some of you may know it as a bailiff or deputy. My assignment last week was at the courthouse where the Lizzie Borden trial was held.
I was assigned to Muni Court bailiff duties once when they were short on staff. Interesting experience! I'll bet you have some war stories... Be safe
