I have never liked all the 1970-72 GS being in one Class, one of the biggest reasons I don’t attend with a car. It should be: 1970 GS original 1970 GS modified 1971GS original 1971 GS modified 1972 GS original 1972 GS modified 1973-75 GS original 1973-75 GS modified it’s broken down like this at most shows, why can’t we at this Show?
What modifications are we looking at? Cars in the grass? Classes? Does this include the concours row too?
I agree & IIRC that's m/l how it used to be when there were enough cars to support it. Hopefully everything is on the table. Thank you for the heads-up/opportunity Roberta! I'll email Carl & post it here as well when I do.
A "Under Construction" class would probably help in getting guys into the show that dont feel their cars are nice enough to compete in the reg classes. A separate class for the full size cars might be cool as well. By todays standards the A body and TR's are considered full size but in the day they were mid size cars.
Please put the Concours class in the same place as all of the rest of the cars on display rather than in a separate location far from everyone else.
I actually agree with you but it may have something to do with how many cars would be in each class. If it would make each class have too few entrants, maybe they could have 3 individual classes for the 70-72 original cars and one class for all modified 70-72 cars.
That would work really good also. 1,2,3 in each year, then a custom class, then a survivor class, and a under construction class would be a fine way to do it .
From what I have observed at the GS Nationals. The number of cars attending the show does not support the expense of having trophies made, then not using them. In 2019 there were 4 convertibles in that class. Personally I don't bring my car for a trophy. I would like to see more cars in the show. .
More cars is the end game for sure. Enough to fill the circle track area & for it to be restricted to show cars only and not used as pits would be great!
I don't have a dog in this fight since its doubtful that I will ever get my car to Bowling Green but I personally could care less about a trophy, I like to have my car judged Concours style since it is more of a challenge to me to get things right. The '68's don't get much interest at regular shows and they never have a chance when bunched in a class like 68-72 cars. My car would look strange in Concours class now sitting next to all the high end restorations. It did win Gold at the BPG Nats and BCA Nats back in the early 2000's but I have done nothing but drive and maintain it since those days. Maybe you could post of list of the current classes so there is a benchmark to look at. I do have this crazy thought about renting a trailer and dragging the 68 down this year but the chances are very slim unfortunately
I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to try to go this year and would like to bring my car. It's not a show quality car, though and will always be a driver.
$10? You’ve not bought trophies in a long time apparently The trophy cost is not driving the number of classes. What’s driving the classes is that very few people bring their cars anymore. Lots of spectators and very few show cars. This year, 2021, had a very respectable car count (~75 of which were there for the GSX reunion) but the previous 10 years had pretty low numbers. I can say this because I was their and saw it firsthand. A couple of years ago I had the ONLY ‘67 on the show field. I paid to enter show so I could get a dash plaque and then put “display only, do not judge” on my car. So for those of you that want more classes, bring your car and prove that there is a need and they will adjust the classes the following year. Come on people, bring your car to the event, you will be glad that you did. If a trophy is what you need in order to be compelled to bring your car, let me know and I’ll bring you one of the hundreds of trophies collecting dust in our attic. Don’t want your car judged and picked apart? Then just write “do not judge” on your car. That way you still get a dash plaque, a great parking spot on the show field, and people get to enjoy seeing another Buick. Trust me, people come to the event to see cars and it doesn’t have to be perfect in order to be admired.
I have two ideas. 1), Maybe we could either pre-register or at least have a sign-up sheet to gauge the number coming? A somewhat accurate count would allow classes to fit the numbers. 2) Strongly encourage members to bring cars they feel aren’t show worthy. (Mine’s rough around the edges but it looks ok from a distance, helps fill the field and has options and details people may want to see. I don’t want a trophy but do want the show field to be well attended). 2.a) Possibly have a ‘display only’ ticket that is less expensive? Perhaps those who know they won’t win would enter for $10 or $15 versus not participating at all to save $25. Patrick
I've had the same thought & mine isn't show worthy but it'd be nice to have it there. Not sure it needs to be a class per se but would be nice if there was a place to park it amongst other non-show/work in progress/etc. Buicks. Up where all the GSX's were this year would be a nice area for that & is one of the (many) things I'll be suggesting to Carl.
Car show registration form given at gate might help to increase participation. I like the idea of pre-registration for some sort of idea of participation. One of the biggest issues I saw was that all the cars were mixed in the circle track area and seemed like a mess. Would be better to segment by make, model, class, etc. of likeness.
I think you’re kinda putting the cart before the horse by saying, “Hey come this year and maybe next year we’ll make it more appealing” And as far as trophy’s, regardless of cost even at $50 a trophy per class, it’s normal to charge $25 to enter most shows these days, then myself I add in the $1000 in fuel, $$3-400 for hotels ……….to a show I don’t find very appealing . I think I’ve made my point. Also to your point that if all I want is a trophy and making it sound so trivial, We Show Car guys put as much time and money into our cars as racers, and we do it so we can see people enjoy them and like them and we love to see our hard work appreciated and measured against the next guy, just like any racer. Your attitude if applied to the racing venue would be like having guys come and run their car down the track alone and then saying thanks for coming. Nobody would come. One more point , and I’ve made it before, the Buick community is small so you’re gonna get small numbers , open up to a BOPC show with Buicks being Showcased and you’ll get a much bigger response I Guarantee! And I really enjoy seeing tons more cars of different makes and models than just Buicks. This is not rocket science, it’s Car Show 101.
Please move the concours cars off of the busiest road in the place. Way to many opportunities for an accident with so many vehicles driving on two sides of the group of cars.
