my 70 stage 1 was upgraded to hei igniton while my uncle had, he also said he took the ram air off because of some clearence problem with the carb he put on. If i put it back to stock height and such will the scoops for the ram air assembly fit over the hei??? Open element makes for more noise but i want the ram air aseembly back on.

    Bob,

You have two options: you can either remove the bottom part of the driver's side element (the fiberglass cup) or, you can hack it so it fits.

I don't recommend hacking it, for obvious reasons. The main reason of course being, these air cleaners aren't growing on trees!!

That being said, the answer is NO. It won't fit the way it came from the factory, making the "ram air" option a moot point. Not that it really worked anyway.

I had the same problem on one of my old cars and hacked it so it would fit :Dou: :Dou: . Needless to say, that Ram Air air cleaner is long gone...

    Hope that helps

    Bob,
Bretts right.I had the same clearances on my 350 too.I wanted to retain the aircleaner so,I ditched the HEI and went with the stock type distributor that was an Accel hooked up to a Stinger ignition. You can always contact the ignition man on this board to get a distributor from him that uses electronics in it but looks stock.

    Bob,

Lose the HEI. They suck. They fail over 4000 RPM. Get an old points unit and send it to www.davessmallbodyheis.com. He'll convert it to electronic for you. Then you need a stock-type hot coil, mounted in the stock location.

    It'll run a LOT better.

Worst case scenario... lose the stock epoxy coil and use a remote unit.

    Bob,

Eventually I ditched the HEI and went with the Stinger S-4. I never had any problem with the Stinger but a lot of guys are really big on Ignitionmans points to electronic conversions.

One of these days when I get some extra loot, I plan on going that route myself...

I dunno:Do No: but my ram air cleaner assembly cleared the HEI. I do have a performer intake though, and it might be just enough extra clearance to make it work. I think the Performer is just a little taller than the stocker.

Brent, you are correct with the taller intake it will just clear the air cleaner.

It didnt work with my b4b. I even got rid of the hei and went back to the stock dist. Now it clears the dist but i have hood clearance problems. When i shut my hood it hits the air cleaner even with the foam seals not being on it.

Now....Im not saying its an Optimal setup.....but it fits underhood. The Aircleaner does sit up alittle on the left side due to resting on the hei and the support bracket off the thermostat housing.

I had heard about clearance issues with HEI too. Put mine on for the first time the other and it cleared, not by much but it did. I using the performer manifold.

Oppps.....forgot to add thats a Holley 850 DP under there

Not sure if that matters (i.e. if its a different height at the aircleaner lip than a QJ)

Before I got my Performer intake, my ram air aircleaner wouldn't fit
too, so I took the scoop 'bucket' off the driver's side, and made a custom plastic one that would clear the HEI. Wasn't a lot of work. It didn't look like a trick custom job from Barris' shop, but it kept rainwater off the HEI.

The stock ram air aircleaner does indeed have a benefit. The whole concept of acheiving true 'ram air' in a car, especially with a pair of scoops so low and in the middle of the low pressure spot of the hood, is bunk, but the air on the outside of the hood is almost certainly cooler and more dense than air under the hood. Dense air is good air, good air is cool air:TU:

I had bought a 70 GS 455 convertible 4 speed about 2 years ago. At some point someone swapped in a HEI distributor and hacked the air cleaner to pieces to fit. I cried when i saw it. Skip the HEI distributor and put a pertronix in the stock dist. Use a good coil and consider using an ignition box such as the 6AL box from MSD. It made a huge difference on my car.

c'mon... whats wrong with the Pertronix? I've never had any problems? Should I not be using the Ignitor?

I would also like to no what is so bad with the Pertronix. I know people that have them in different makes of car and trucks and i have one in my 70 GS and like it. What the deal?

Some people have good luck with them some don't. I am on my 2nd one (before I learned about the small body HEI conversion) with no problems from this one as of yet. If this one dies, I have a new dist. to have converted over to HEI.

I just put an HEI in my 71 Stage 1. Took it out first time yesterday.
Runs great. Went through two Pertronix so I have no confidence in them anymore. Ran good when it worked. Some guys have no problems. I have a performer intake w/ Q-jet carb. All fit just right.
I added a 1" tall wood block painted black and epoxed to the center of the snorkel underneath to sid on the support. I'm real happy with the set up. Oh I also cut down the foam seals 1" so they woudn't look scrunched.

I suppose you could use a 1" spacer under the stock air cleaner if you didn't go with aluminum intake. But I would strongly suggest the spacer under the snorkel so as not to put all that downward twist force on the carb body.
