Oh that thing on top is an extra jack handle. Heading in the opposite direction, I could work the jack from the trans end while guiding it. Bruce Roe
So here's the solution I came up with when I installed my 2004R a few months ago. I ran into the exact same problem using a cheap harbor freight trans jack not fitting under the car. I ended up using my engine hoist chained to the front of the frame to lift the car up way high. It was slightly "sway-ey" but let me get the trans and jack under no problem!
