I'm looking for a International Scout. I don't know alot about them, but I know I want one. My current daily driver is a 98 Blazer, runs great, but this summer I would like to replace it with a scout with a removeable top. I spent a good amount of time driving a '76 Scout II. They are incredibly durable machines. The one I drove had the 345 V8 and a 4-speed. The problem with them is that they rust very badly. It will not be easy to find one that is in good original condition due to that issue. Also, those were very expensive vehicles at the time. They were considered industrial duty vehicles. The folks that bought them were not the folks that buy Hummers these days. They were bought and used hard...real hard. I could tell you some good stories about some of the stuff we would drag around with that Scout. Funny, I also have a '98 Blazer with 220k miles. It has been a very durable vehicle. -Mike
Mine has 170k on it. I knew rust was gonna be an issue but maybe I underestimated it. As much as Id love to have one by summer this more than likely be a long term plan...
They are great vehicles, but the reason you don't see many anymore is the rust issue. I think they were rusting when they came off the factory floor.
I worked in a local International parts dept a long time ago. The replacement panels came from the factory, rust already installed for you :TU:
i had i believe the last year of them 1978. they quit making them because of the epa mandates i believe. i replaced all the panels about 6 years later. i think if i remember right they sold them cheap to you because of the rust. those panels lasted another 5 years in ohio. any way back in the late 80's some one was making fiberglass panels for the scout. also that engine was great, it was used in a lot of buses. had to change the waterpump once. loved and wish i had a new one. jim

I recall seeing one in Omaha when I lived there a few years back that was right hand drive. Kinda cool. I always wanted to pick it up.
we've got lots of them around the northwest check out craigslist for them we don't have the rust issues you eastern guys have either worked on lots of them don't understand your fascination w/ a truck that was built w/ left over misc. tractor parts but hey to each his own i guess
i love scouts. mine is a 79 pick up 345, tf727, dana300 (i think, havent been under it in a while so i cant remember for sure), and locked dana 44s. im lucky, NO rot. i can see why you would want one, they have ALOT of torque, look awesome, and can go almost everywhere. they have excelent approach angles and crappy departure angles, and are heavy as hell. just because it was made by a tractor company doesnt mean its a tractor. they are more capable stock then alot of built trucks i see. good luck finding one
We owned a couple when I was growing up. They are very cool with durable drivetrains. I would love to have a 60's short cab and totally trick it out. Mark
I had a 75 I paid $200 for after hounding the guy to sell it to me. Drove it for about 2 years until the drivers door literally fell off of it. Great in the snow and very reliable. Not the best on gas the 345 2bbl really uses the fuel. They made them until 1980 also had and option of a 6 cylinder diesel. Those are pretty hard to score.

I had a rusty 77 I bought in "94' Loaded ;345 auto a/c tilt cruise am/fm 8track & my reason for buying it << a power angle plow >>.that was the plowing est POS I ever owned ,,,,,,,,the plows on a POS dakota now..... Scout is in corn binder heaven Chuck
Drove by one taking a different way home from work tonight. Man was it rough. Rust everywhere, p. door caved in, Im guessing the gas tank rusted out of it cus he had a fuel cell mounted in the back cargo area. Still wanted $800 for it. The only upside is it came with a plow.
If you really want one don't waist your time in the rust belt. Go out west Arizona, California, West Texas even Colorado is good. They are notorious for rot so it is best to start with one as rust free as possible. If your serious I can keep an eye out here for one here in Texas.
