A long-time buddy of mine supercharged is '97 Vette last fall and I thought he was out of the woods with testing and tuning it until I saw this post pop up the other day.... what a mess. There's almost nothing salvageable from the build.

Wow, your friend seems to have a really toasted motor! He did a good job getting a piece of piston into the intake valley... Is he going to replace the engine?

Also it looked like he was going to try to save the heads, has that been ruled out?

Bob, from what I understand he's going to send the heads to a machinist to have them checked out but plans on selling them and not reusing. He wants them to get checked first so he can be up-front with selling them. He said he has to replace the block ... it has 2 holes in it from the rods passing through.

Yeah that didn't look like the kind of damage where the block could survive, that's too bad. Looks like a pretty awesome motor otherwise!

Are those pistons hypereutectic? Did early LS motors use them, or do all LS motors use them?

Edit, found my answer, all the LS motors EXCEPT the LS9 use cast hypereutectic pistons.

    Time for forged pistons.:)

For sure, lean/detonation while in boost can cause a lot of damage.:)

Most guys lift the heads b4 pistons go,...the rod bolts in a select few years are not great,..but other than that,..

There are some lifters that like to come apart than **** can one too,..morels,..the bad batch of the ls7s,..and some early comps but the Johnsons have solved that problem

Even the Johnson's have to come apart to be checked lately it appears.

I've said for years alot of these parts are engineered to fail,..then you have to buy more,...if our engines lasted 20yrs they wouldn't stay in business

I once knew somebody with an early 90s Camaro all hopped up with a TPI 350 & lowered suspension -w- big fat tires who loved to do burnouts. Then one day, the tranny let go. Fixed that, then the rear end let go. Fixed that, then he blew the driveshaft. $$$ here, $$$ there, rinse & repeat...

I don't care how well something is built; flog it long enough, and it will break.

Special ordered a 2000 Z28 SS 6 speed manual with absolutely no options, manual windows , seats, no rear window defroster, ect. Tried to delete the a/c and radio, but had to have those. The LS1 in that car was the most piston rattling, Mobil 1 oil drinking engine I ever had. But man would it run.
