ight ill get to the point....friday nite on capital(the strip in raleigh, nc)....anyways....this chevy a-hole pulls up next to me askin bout mny car and then says buick means pullover and let me win....he was driving a 71 chevelle ss 396....he revs his engine twice and its all over..being 18 and i never go over 45 ever to keep my engine at top notch....this pissed me off badd:af: . anyways i was sitting in my 71 gs 350....engine jus done....turns green and we lay it out. NOW WE ALL NOW THE FUED WITH THE CHEVYS AND BUICKS....now this race was over in about 5 secs when the torque monster that buicks are known for blows him in the pavement. i was about 7-8 car lengths in front of him when i pull off and he comes blasting through(like always when you race a loser)...anyways WHEN WILL CHEVYS BOW DOWN TO THE TORQUE MONSTER THAT BUICKS ARE???????:blast:

Not to burst your bubble, but a 396 even in mild state of tune and build, will make quite a bit more torque than a Buick 350..sounds like the guy in the 396 wasn't even racing You..what does "when will Chevies Bow Down to the Torque monster than Buicks are"
Now if you said you had a GS455,that would be one thing..I personally own a 1970 Buick GS 350 (nice car,but no terror, even w/3.42 gears) and have owned a 1970 GS455 4 speed convertible, now that car, besides being rare is a torque monster..you wanna talk torque,I own a 70 Chevelle SS454 that has run a best of 12.99 and averages 13.0-13.1 ET's with 2.73 gears in total street trim, including tires and full exhaust, and weigh in at 3950 lbs. w/driver and a half tank of gas..now thats torque!
I don't believe in "kill stories"...false ego boost..go to the dragstrip if you wanna have fun :TU:
BTW,not knocking your car either,I'm sure its a strong running, capable car, just like to keep things in perspective.

 what does that mean? I own a 68 Cutlass convertible,a 1970 Buick GS350 and a Chevelle SS454,plus a 1967 Cadillac Sedan DeVille..sounds like my inventory makes me more of an A-body guy than anything..I'm not brand specific..I just love the A bodies..period :TU:

At least 3 out of your 4 of cars are worth keeping anyway.

Dude, I hear ya. Don't take the flack personally here. I'm a Buick person but a general muscle car fan. You're right about your 350-455 analogy. I've driven 350, 400, 455. There is a definite difference between even the 350 and 400.

By the way, got a name? :TU:

Ken,my name is Chris..and I don't take the ribbing seriously.
For the record,my all stock 1970 GS 350 ran a best of 15.09 @91 MPH with a 2.30 60 ft. this is all stock,85K original miles..not too bad IMHO and experience at the dragstrip.I just confirmed the mechanical advance worked, bumped the base timing,checked/confirmed WOT,and tweaking the secondary air valve. It has a TH350 and 3.42 gears

    Mark,combo is as follows:
    454 .030 over
    .100 domed pistons
heads are closed chamber 101 cc's (actual compression is 10.59 to 1)
unported with stock size 2.06/1.72 valves
cam is an Ultradyne hydraulic flat tappet,223/231 @.050,.525/.550 lift 112 LSA advertised is 280/288
    Edelbrock Performer intake
3310 Holley stock out of the box other than the lightest yellow secondary spring
    1 3/4" primary tube headers,3" collectors
full 2.5" exhaust with old black Flowmasters (early 90's)
    Stock TH400/B&M 2400 holeshot convertor
    2.73 geared 12 bolt w/a Powertrax locker
I leave at idle (best 60 ft. 1.83 average in the 1.90's)
    Shift manually @ 5000 rpms
Cross stripe at 4100 rpms @ 103 MPH in "drive"
    Stock F41 rear suspension
Car looks completely stock other than intake/headers
I race at Lebanon Valley a few times a year too.If you ever see a black cherry 70 SS say hello.
This combo can be duplicated for any brand big block or small block, but with a small block, the car will need 3.73 gears and be reasonably light (3200-3400)

Having owned an ss396 chevelle myself (plus a buick 455, pontiac 400, and buick 340) There is no way, outside of a race prep'ed and barely streetable engine, that a 350 buick is more of a torque monster than chevy's littlest big block. It is just a fiction. the 396 I had in my 1967 Chevelle put out close to 400 ft lbs in stock trim and the 402 I replaced it with (a 396 block with a factory overbore) out of a c-10 pickup made over 400ft-lbs. I don't doubt that you probably accelerated away from him, but who is to say he was racing you in the first place. It is easy to take off from a light quick and declare your self the winner of a street race, but just because you say it was doesn't make it so.

What is with this chevy buick rivalry? Aren;t there better competitors out there than cars that basically share over 60% of the components with your own. What ever happened to Mopars as the sworn enemy of the GM faithful? Last time I checked the rivalries that mattered were ford vs chevy (don't see a buick in there...hmmmm) and Mopar vs. Ford vs. GM (think Super Stock wars). On the track it is really Everybody vs. Everybody anyway so why you guys bother to bash a guy for a brand loyalty he doesn't even have (Believe it or not there are quite a few of us A-body "guys" out there who haven't bought into the hype of just one make) for a story that is clearly full of holes and self aggrandizing bs is beyond me.

BTW, Chris (mr4speed) I don;t doubt that your car does what it says but 2.73 gears and low 13 time slips, your chevelle is not stock.

Finally, without the popularity of chevelles a lot of the reproduction parts that we have for our own non-chevy cars would not be available at all or at least not as soon as they are.

Geeto 67,I didn't say my car was stock, but I did say all street trim (no open exhaust or slicks) Please,no offense either,I'm not trying to sound like a wise guy :) And your comments are well said in regards to Buick 350/396 Chevy deal, and my feelings exactly, especially at the strip.."its everybody vs. everybody"
Thats why I posted my combo_Other than the cam, headers, and intake, theres nothing dramatic or expensive about it.I even run stock rockers too.I've had similar results with an Olds 455 too,in a 1971 442 running 2.73 gears and high 12's/low 13's...I'd love to do this with a Buick 455 in a Skylark/GS too..that would be
Thanks for the welcome and kind words Mark

I'm combining some of both worlds, I have a 72 Chevelle with a "modified" 455 Stage 1. Should be the torque monster I want.
