I have a question, perhaps confusion, regarding “black decal clusters”
In the mid-1980s I owned a ’70 GS 350. It had a black bucket-and-console interior, identical to my ’70 GS 455, except for the dash. It did not have the gauge package, and the “woodgrain area” was black.
Maybe I’m “mis-remembering,” but I’m pretty sure that part of the cluster was painted black, with individual decals of white lettering for “LIGHTS,” “WIPER,” etc…
Obviously, anyone who has either removed woodgrain, or bought a repro, has seen that the casting has a textured surface, with “flats” for potential “LIGHTS,” “WIPER,” etc… lettering.
I think I have also crossed paths with ’70 Skylarks with “black 'woodgrain' appliques…”
(The GS 350 in question was “1970 built,” as far as flat lenses, steel radiator cover, black-top overflow… I don’t remember which plant it was, but I do remember it was GMAD, not Flint…)
Just speculating, but maybe production was simplified at some point…? Replacing an “inconvenient” process where some clusters got little word decals, while other got a woodgrain applique, with a process in which everything got an “applique,” (the woodgrain applique adding “cost” to the MSRP…???)
Thoughts? Similar experiences? (Maybe I’m just imagining that at some point Buick actually did the dashes the way they clearly designed them…???)
