Change is a part of life and no matter what will always happen. BUT not all change is good and for the better. And just to be clear I'm speaking solely on the emblem not the fact that GM is going more green and towards the future of electric cars, that I'm all for because I'll be long dead before they completely ban or restrict gas powered cars and if I'm dead then why would I really care anyways.
From a marketing strategy perspective, you are correct. My company went to all caps which depicts a more strong presence. In this day of culture clash where many long standing logos are being changed, its refreshing to some of us to see longstanding ones remain unchanged. However, time marches on.....no doubt logos in a cursive font will be put aside as it's been pretty much eliminated from modern day handwriting teaching.
It looks like a minecraft, or lego face when I look at it. A lower case logo makes me think they don't think much of themselves. They may as well go ahead and make it pink.
I would venture a guess and say 90% of buyers will never notice the difference, 9% might if they remember reading about or hearing it in the news, and the 1% which are car enthusiasts spread out over multiple brands they would never buy really don’t matter in the grand scheme

The logo fits with the direction the video shows perfectly. GM has had an image problem for years and it's not even the cars but that they still had the corporate mentality that they did when they were invincible. That mentality and way of running business is long gone. Gone are the days of building a car and telling people this is what you will buy, today people want to see the progress, see the development, see the technology, and see the strides to respect our resources and start turning the corner toward a cleaner planet. The gradient color was a good touch, it's still bold but not conceded. Good for them for trying to stay fresh and good for them for pissing off the curmudgeons.
widespread adoption of electric cars is a "speculative" future. The current electric grid infrastructure is antiquated. Another scenario is synthetic fuels. Anyone remember Jimmy Carter? Look up Sapphire Energy, they went the same way as Solyndra. The IC engine is likely to remain, for a long time, with greater refinements, far longer than any of the so called "experts" claim. There is no current viable substitute for the stored energy in petroleum, that can be replicated otherwise. The energy to recharge an electric vehicle has to be generated somehow. There is no free lunch.

Hold up, was that 1975 emblem also the hood ornament? - I think EV are kind of a fad right now, and probably will be for some time. I think Hydrogen Cell, or any energy cell, engines are the real future. The main problem with EV is how slow they are to recharge. That makes them unsuitable for service use, heavy duty use, military, the list goes on. You can't just swap the batteries out. Until they can reduce charging time to a few minutes for a FULL charge they are handicapped.
The Hawk being shown as the emblem for Buick for those years is deceptive, while they did use it on some of the cars and in advertising, the trishield was still used and was still the official emblem of Buick those years.
