I know all about roll cages and their function, but I am wondering what guys have done to get easy access to the back seat with NHRA cages?

Is there anyway to acomplish a certified cage, with easy acces to the back seat?

We are defeating the purpose here a little bit, however it probably can be done with some imagination.

Input please with some pictures if applicable?

    thanks
    Josh

there is no way to make a legal,NHRA cage with easy access to rear seat the spine bar has to be where it has to be and it also cannot be removable from a LEGAL, NHRA cage, you will always have to climb over or under,it :) you can have swing out side bars though, till 8.50 on new cages 7.5 on old ones allready certed till cert runs out ,than they will be certed as 8.50.bob

ps ,i stand corrected on this one, when looking at picts before, i did not see the spine bar in front of the seat, and the fact that he also has a funny car cage, incorparated in the design, and with great persaverance on his part he got a ,cert. , sorry Bob

I retained my backseat more for appearance.....A child could get back there through the middle of the two frt seats but that is about all.

Which bar are you calling a spine bar? :Do No:

The horizontal x-bar in the main hoop behind the frt seat(S) is what Bob is referring to if I'm not mistaken....

a spine bar is the bar that goes left to right on the main hoop right behind the seats, thats where your belts have to be secured to ,if you go to the track

heres a pic of an incomplete cage ,but the bar in the middle of the main hoop is the spine bar :) bob

Do you have to have a spine bar behine the passenger seat as you would never have a passenger at the track?

look at pic :puzzled: ,the spine bar goes from, left to rght[ or right to left] from one side of main hoop to other it is to strengthen the main hoop, yes it has to go alll the way across, bob

    Hi Guys,

Bob.....did you read all of this guy's site's dialog and view all of the pic's??:Do No:

Quote..."After much work contacting senior NHRA inspectors we did finally get approval for my design. It does meet all the requirements of the NHRA rules. I now have the only NHRA certified cage legal to 8.50's that still allows open access to the rear seat!"

The last pic's that are posted at that site show the NHRA certification sticker on the cage. Is this a.."where there's a will, there's a way?" senerio? :Do No:

Just wondering before this is totally dismissed as an "illegal" cage design by those who may not take the time to read the entire article...:)

    Sfi Cert

That guys heading says SFI approved cage install. That cage doesn't meet any of the SFI specs. It may have got a nhra cert but the sfi specs are way different. There is no way that cage will ever pass a SFI Cert.

Just happened on this picture......Interesting,Looks like the "Spine" bar could be to the left of the helmet but being that low a backseat would be accessible.
I know,Kevin,You might know the car personally,But I've seen that car in the mid-8 second zone.....

Thats Kevin Ribbens 67 Caprice, He's local to me. Dave Zelmer did the chassis work the first time around and It was updated last year, not sure who did the work, but I don't think it was Dave. Zelmer did Bob Hoods Nova the first time when it was back halfed with mini tubbs. From what I can remember it doesn't have a "normal" spine bar but its tied into the front upper 4-link mount.

A couple of weeks ago he broke the tranny going through the lights and stuck it into the wall, I guess just cosmetic damage.....

Gary that impala is bad ass :TU: It looks to have a 25.5 cert maybe 25.2 hard to tell from the pics for sure.Anyway sfi cars are allowed to run the spine bar that low in fact mine supports the upper 4 link plates. But you have a funny car cage containing you in the car and supporting your back. The mustang cage is missing alot of bars to be sfi certified that he claims it is.Also thats is only good to 8.50 is another indication its just a regular cage cert.I'm not ripping on the guy it's a good idea.

Nice setup with funny car cage

Can some one straiten these out for me. You can go up to 8.50 with out a window net and only 10 point cage to go faster than 8.50 you need add a funnycare cage that makes your car a 25.5 spec car what has to be done to 25.5 spec car to make 25.2 isnt 25.2 good to 7.49et only back halfed cars can go 7.49 with stock frontend and stock firewall. 25.1 is 7.49et and faster i here you cant have a stock firewall and more bars have to be added. I just want to here the info alot of people hear these number but people dont no what they mean. I hear lot of different stuff that needs to be added to or changed. Lot of cars here have to have a roll cage cerified with a NHRA sticker on a bar these has to be done when you get into the 9s. Some people have to lower there seat because there head lines up with hop. Your head with your helmet on need to be below the hop. I hear people say you cant run in the 9s or high 8s with swing out door bars. I no poeple that do it. I thought about changing somethings things and adding a small funnycar cage to my car for safety and also they look cool when you do them right. Dont like the big ones some people go over board. The Impala is bad looking. I like the Pro-Filler cast Aluminum Tunnel ram those look sweet i have some friends that have them on there big Chevys. They need to cast some intakes up like that for the stage 2,3,4 heads

I beleive at 9.99 you need a window net.
The 9.99 nhra cage tag is good to 8.50.
At 8.50 you can go 4 different ways
25.5 3600 lb max with a stock or modified floor pan fire wall and stock unibody or frame.good to 7.50
25.4 good to 3800lb and 7.50 I dont have the particulars I think this cert deals mostly with square tube cars.
25.2 3200lb max tube chassis main structure good to 6.0
25.1e 2600lb max tube chassis main structure good to 6.0

The sfi cert applies only to the cage it self the frame outside the interior has nothing to do with it.There is more than just a funny car cage there are braces thet need to be in the roof structure and floor structure. Now where the driver sits in relation to the main hoop has alot to do with how the cage is constructed. There are so many different little things that go into the cert you realy need to see the rules. For your car Jeff you would need a 25.5 cert as would most on this board(if they wanted to go under 8.50) unless they have a tube car.
