I've been very busy this summer so excuse the 4 month delay in posting. I just got a chance to read the 2011 PSMCDR updated rules. I had planned to bring the '57 up this year but it's now illegal. The new Aluminum Flywheel rule has stopped me. I will not run a 54 year old cast iron wheel, and I can't afford a billet for one event. The no MSD rule didn't help, I had a lot of time and money in mine and can't really afford to scrap it. 2.20- 60 foot times would kind of indicate the "traction control" system isn't very effective anyway. I can understand the rule changes and actually agree with them, I only wish they'd been in effect when I built the car, it would have been a lot less expensive than redoing this stuff.
Frank, sorry to hear that you and the 57 won't be at Stanton this year. What with your fabrication abilities, it's a wonder that you can't whittle a proper steel flywheel out of a hunk of cold rolled. I know that supercharged cars build more pressure in the cylinders and need hotter spark, but there may be a points/distributor/coil set-up that would help solve that problem. As for the MSD and such, I'm afraid way too much has been made of them. While the possibilities of traction control and such may be possible with them, I'll go out on a limb and say that they weren't being used for that purpose. Just watch the top cars.... the stocker they get, the faster they run.
Thats too bad Frank. Its a better race when you and your car are there. Nice to see something different than the normal GTO,s,L88 Vettes, and Camaros.
So the answer is to ignore the rulebook and put the event organizers in the uncomfortable position of telling you you can't participate? uzzled:
NHRA alows 200 LBS to be added or subtracted from a car to alow a car to run a different class. So my dads hemi cuda weighs 3170 LBS In SS/AH NHRA will allow 200 LBS to be added so the car could then run SS/BA. This also applies to the stock eliminator class as well. NHRA also weighs the car with the driver then subtracts 190 LBS for driver weight to come up with the actual weight of the car. the 190 is a gues my memory aint what it ust to be, it may be a little less. And yes that weight of 190 is for all cars wether you weigh 300 lbs or less than 190 LBS. Just thought I would share what I found out, Guys I wouldn't make a big deal of the weight issue just don't show up with a car that weighs 3000 LBS with the driver, may be a little fishy.:Brow:
The weight rule was already killed due to the fact NHRA adjusts the weights every week, and Bob and Dan didn't want the hassle. That and the fact they wanted to distance themselves from NHRA since thats what started all the problems. Instead they will be inspecting car cars they feel are excessivly light. Unless you own a pontiac, Dan has a special factory documented hall pass for them. hahaha Frank ,I second the Call Bob or Dan comment first, your car is a joy to watch and would be missed! Besides I think theres an old fart clause in there for you and Dave, to get away with somthing once in a while! PS. the Bird runs great
This billet Y block unit doesn't seem too pricey at $285. http://www.ford-y-block.com/Fws-dampers.htm
Tim, the NHRA weights don't change weekly. Horsepower factors do change from time to time and when that happens the race weight is adjusted. The shipping weight on NHRA's website remains constant. I believe it was proposed the "shipping weights" were to be used and not the "race weights". Just saying is all
I believe you're looking for the NHRA, 2 doors down... Nope, Tim is correct... "All cars must weigh no less than the NHRA calculation based on year, model, engine, and re-factored horsepower." Unless a subscription to National Dragster is included with the admission @ Stanton, then all of this NHRA baloney needs to end...no need to *further* complicate things, as some folks are having a hard time following the rules "as is".
Brian, It's not, unless your income is only a SS check. I have invested in the original flywheel, and the MSD. Hate to replace perfectly good parts. If I was still working as an engineer it wouldn't be a problem. But add the Pertronix, the flywheel and the entry fee and that is more than I can afford. I will NOT put the guys in an untenable position of allowing the car to run as is, so no Ford until I figure out how to make it legal again.
