My Mistake Brian.. I just talked to Tim and your right, the 4550 block is 83 and change.. ouch... Tim said they got hammered by the foundry and then everywhere down the line thru the machining processes... The change was made last week, and they have not had time to update the website. JW
I did get inline. I really don’t even have another car to put one in,as they all have their engines, but I would like to do a 350 build to see what I can do with it. I am in no hurry. All of the parts will need to be made anyway. A build like this would have been cool to do about 10-12 years ago for an EMC build. Prices for parts and services are only going to increase, never go back down. The longer you wait, the more it will cost, unfortunately. Materials, machining, foundary, shipping, etc.
At 8300+ for a block that from what I've read stull needs often another 1000 or more in matching. Starts to make crate motors like a 900+hp 620 from Ohio crankshaft for a little over 14k look attractive for racing. I get s$it rolls downhill but these prices are going to put TA in a spot where no one buys this stuff or can justify it
Very true, plus there isn’t much Buick left using an aftermarket block. Scott who did the 1021 Hp buick 350 sells complete pump gas 1000 Hp engines that are pretty darn low cost! https://www.shafiroff.com/chevy-pump-gas-engine/615-bigdawg-twisted.php
Thats an even better bracket motor in my.mind as it won't take expensive race fuel. We are dropping 10-12k for 650hp 482 and they are on verge of blowing up ever passing. I love my buick motor in my bracket car.........and it will make my daddy roll in his grave, but if my new motor doesn't live I'm going to be swapping. I dont need 950 hp, so I can tame that thing down and run it easy and go have fun instead of working my ass off to pay for the next motor to blow up
It is looking like the 350 is a cheaper motor to build, I did a lot of racing after I had this 350 built in 94 especially between there and around 2008 when I got laid off. I did a leakdown test and compression test in the fall last year and it leaked at 8% pretty much and comp was at 190. Yes a lot slower than you 455 guys but I got to say I really beat on this and now there are better parts,, and i got to say this thing really likes nitrous. I put that on in 2005 ran a 125 shot and hit a high 11.81 and 13.50 on the motor. Now I just run a 75 shot and go 12.32. This 350 is like the Energizer Bunny Just a thought.
True, BUT the wait killed a lot of enthusiasm, like impulse buying “ those would be cool, I don’t NEED them, but I want a pair” After waiting, waiting, waiting, you have time to think, other more important/unseen expenses come up, BAM, your “extra” money is gone. I had 2 grand sitting at TA for the heads, after nearly 2 years, I needed that money at home.
Good thought! The “power bar” has risen considerably in the past decade, 500, 700, 900, 1100 hp, 1500, 2000hp, where will it end? I’d be happy with 450 hp outta my 350, I’m not greedy or rich
2 years waiting I thought they were available then at that time isn't that what the bitch is over here no one would buy them?
I ordered the level 2 porting, bigger 2.02 valves, plus the heads milled .030 If I wanted the plain assembled heads I’d probably would have them. Apparently the wait was a machinist.
Funny you mention that, around that time I was talking to him about the heads and after 1/2 hour or so he asked what I did for a living, he said if I was a machinist he’d offer me a job
I really hope things do turn around. I still have wild ambitions of building a Buick 350 powered drag and drive car. I'll probably buy a set of heads just to hold onto if they are offered for sale again. But I agree with others. It is hard to put up the cash and then wait several years for the product.
We asked for the heads for 10 plus years and once they got them only a few people bought them. So yes I’m sure they are at the bottom of the list to have anymore heads machined to sell. Anyone who really wanted them would have them already.
Then they are all sold so what's the damn problem if only a few bought them then they should be there, what they do make 10 damn set or are they waiting for us to supply the money so they can make them this is a bunch of bull period..
OK, I'll take a set but I'd like them summer of this year. I may even drive over to Scotty's to pick them up! Probably others that want them also. I can have Angelucci race port another set of irons for $2,600 that flow 280, crossovers filled, 3 angle vj, shaved, 11/32 stems, good duals, guides, seals, etc.... but they're not light or cool. No, it turned into a can't deliver the goods issue. Demko had his undies in a bunch for two years. I'll gladly take a set, as will others here, but preferably in a timely manor, like this spring or summer.
