All Riv's, of this vintage, had their last 6 digits of the VIN begin with "9", ie: 9xxxxx. doh! ou: it's been too long since i've worked on building my VIN spreadsheet ... i knew that already. stupid, stoopid bob.
i would imagine that some engines were pulled from the rack for teardown & checking of its components. it could then, as a project, been built up to stage 1 specs for furthur testing & then placed back in the rack to install in the next vehicle. another thing that used to happer in car plants is that if u had a good friend working the line & he knew when your vehicle was being built, your friend could see to it that your car received a few free options!
Gerry In this case you could not have a 1972 engine that was not yet even made installed in a 1970 model car in 1970.
