Awesome, you rock!! But it doesn't show how it connects to the block. I'll take a closer look it should be pretty obvious. Jerry
Just terminology. Flexplate: automatic transmission Flywheel: manual transmission Regarding the mounting of the bracket to the block, it's just another hex bolt. I'll see if I can find another photo. Devon
Here's a pic from an old post: http://www.v8buick.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=75918&d=1152228298 Devon
Thought I had one more pic showing installed position. Sorry - no luck finding more at the moment. Devon
I dont think that bracket, or lack of it, is causing your problem. Its either alignment, too much advance or a failed flywheel.
I agree, and will look at it better in the next few days. Although I am going to install the bracket to make sure.
I inspected the flywheel and its not cracked or damaged, infact I believe its been replaced recently due to the condition. I'm considering one of those high torque starters from Summit Racing for $150, it has a 90 warranty. Do you think this starter would hold up??? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Jerry
I had then same problem and installed a Power Master high torque starter and broke that too! Save your money and adjust the timing first.
Wow, I did retard the timing and still broke the rebuilt starter. I guess I will try the "L" bracket next. Jerry
Guys I will just throw this into the mix. I had this problem years ago on one of my builds. BUT the motor turned over slow and it just took one misfire and BANG there goes the starter nose. The way I fixed it was to put the large battery cables with the high cranking amp battery in it and the problem went away!!!:TU: If the motor won't spin fast enough you will break the nose cone. Good luck and keep us informed. Mike
Not sure what the actual degree was. I just spun the distributor alittle bit. Going to work out the details after the holiday. Thanks, after I work out all the timing stuff, I will try that. Jerry
I spoke to Tim today and ordered my "L" bracket. Said these starters are breaking at an alarming rate and has sold a bunch of them, only a few more left he said. Plans are to check and recheck my timing and replace the cap ,rotor, plugs and wires, install "L" bracket drink a beer and try it again. I'll keep you posted. Jerry
ALRIGHT, today I tried to install the "L" bracket onto my starter and their is no threaded hole that lines up on the starter for my "L" bracket to attach. wtf !!!! Getting really pissed off now. Please excuse my language, but I guy can only take so much... I went back to the parts store where I bought the starter and they swear its the correct rebuilt starter and even showed me a picture of a new starter that also does not have the threaded hole in it. Anybody shed some light on this??? Jerry
I believe I bought a replacment starter and it didnt have the hole either. I just shelved the bracket. I haven't had a starter problem though.
Ok , there is not a threaded hole in the starter for that bracket . The top through bolt that holds the starter together has a threaded section extending from the hex that tightens against the starter end cap and that is where the bracket goes . Install the bracket on the stud area and put a nut on there to hold it and a bolt into the block .
Maybe some do, but mine, and the one depicted in the post, bolts to the side of the starter housing, not to the end cap. The replacement starter I bought from the local parts store did not have the threaded provision either. I do have the original starter at home that has the threaded hole in the side, but its no where near the end cap. see in this link http://www.v8buick.com/attachment.ph...8&d=1152228298
