No, I talked with him at least 3 years back. I'm going to make a point of asking him in Salem. I've never seen the cover advertised with that improvement. It doesn't always hit. Mine didn't either, but I slotted the fuel pump anyway just to be sure. It doesn't hurt to do that.
I know I read it, I just can't remember where I did. I shouldn't have said it was 'adverstised' like that. I'm hoping that it was addressed
No, I have been too busy. I have today off, so I'm trying again, but it was a good friend's birthday yesterday and I'm a little, um, sluggish this morning
Well, it seems high quality I'll tell you what. I haven't started it yet, but I expect slightly higher oil pressure- but I have very good oil pressure anyway in this engine, so whatever I'm using it becasue it's what I could find in a synthetic 10w-40. The more I think about the synthetic 10w-30 from Mobil I'd been using, the more I want the right grade oil for peace of mind if nothing else, plus Mobil's crummy filter did this to me in the first palce, so I don't want them to have my money The Royal Purple actually is, well, purple. My Dad says that there was another oil that color years ago. The Royal Purple actually has a pleasant smell.
Sluggish Chris? Never heard it called that before but I like it. You should get over being sluggish by noon, unless your really sluggish. Good luck!!! Dave Berry
I thought the Mobil filters were near the top as far as quality goes; in fact I was considering one. Can you elaborate Chris? Devon
Dan is right, Mobil's filters are made by....something Labs. I forget now. My Mobil 1 filter failed and pulled some of the filter phenolic/paper into my engine and starved a pair of main bearings for oil. Wiped out two main bearings, damaged a rod bearing. Pump screen was clogged with papery goo yes, it was the high end Mobil 1 filter. They told me to pound sand when I told them they let a defect slip through. Maybe it was a one in a trillion thing, but I'm gun-shy now I put it all back together today. no time to fire it up, that will be tomorrow. Have found a seeping leak at the t-stat housing. It must be porous; I sanded it flat and I sandblasted the intake. I'll have to get a new one. It's so small it would evaporate while driving
I fixed it. Tick's gone, replaced by some low-key clatter- I'll have to adjust the roller rockers but it's not ticking anymore I'm now seeing 50 psi hot at about 50 mph with the Royal Purple 10W-40, it was about 50 psi with the 10w-30 synthetic I might want to turn the pressure regulator down a bit. I never thought I'd post that Sounds great, needs a tuneup. Plugs might be getting fouled, I'll have to check the mixture, too
I wonder if a filter screen would of saved your motor Chris? The new thing out. Just some window screen cut to fit in the top of an oil filter to grab junk so you can see it. But it does have 3-4 holes punched in it just incase you plug the whole screen with junk.
The tick? Well, I'm pretty sure it was the OEM lifter I had used I'm lucky enough (if that's what you call it) to own a little private joke made by Buick- a block with a factory re-sized lifter bore. Last summer, I wiped the bearings out. Well, cr@p...here I go again, I thought, i need to rebuild again. the first time was in '99, and the engine had been great. Quiet, powerful, a dream, no oil leaks, even with rope seals. Well, it turns out that a clogged pickup screen doesn't let a lot of oil go through it  But it does make a nice hollow rapping noise from the bottom end you can hear over a screaming exhaust, it turns out I stripped it down, the only thing I left in were the pistons, pins, rings and con-rods. My # 5 and #3 main bearings were down to the copper jacket but haden't spun. I checked out the crank journals, and one rod and two mains had a single scratch each I cut down a leather belt and got the finest scothc-brite available (Mas Fina  ). I used the belt to hold the scotch-brite, and polished the journals until the ridge on the scratches were gone, using the belt like one of those crummy wood saws that looks like a strand of wire, remember those? i washed the crank with soap and water, then blasted it with WD-40 until all the water was gone. I re-installed the crank then I plastigauged everything; everything was still in spec from the machinst's job in '99 I had put in my new Stage 1 heads, my new cam, my new lifters (minus one) and my precious honest to God 0.010" oversized factory lifter, for the bore stamped with an "O" (Or maybe a "C"? It's hard to tell), and my new roller rockers Well, the d@mn thing ticked, right in the area of the OEM lifter, but of course it was impossible to tell for sure I adjusted the valves a dozen times, no improvement. I stored the car and waited for better weather- by the time some parts had come in, I was working in the snow! So my guess is it was the OEM oversize lifter. Sitting around for decades, something got in there. A teensy bit of corrosion, cardboard maybe (It had been removed from it's little box and mucked with many times, probably to show off to someone is my guess), but something was ticking So I removed the lifters, disassembled, inspected, cleaned, and reassembled them all. Pain in my :moonu: but I guess it turns out to be worth it. So of course, with the engine's top end apart, I cleaned, painted, blah blah everything because I can't stand to work on a ball of grease, even though I'd done all this last October. I have some pics but they are on my dad's camera and it's at his place I have to check out the brakes because they are sinking but that's minor compared to all this, I'll whip that into shape quick enough. brakes are run of the mill pains
so what filter did u go with? I'm using Purolator right now... have used Group 7 in the past with no problems from those ever... sound good?
