I didn’t do a damn thing to my Buick all weekend long except, I drove it for hundreds and hundreds of miles. Probably 500 miles total this weekend. I put two full gas tanks of gas in it. I drank beer in it. I went to a car show in it. I drove on lonely country roads, and busy highways. My wife and I had a great time going to the BOPC in Auburndale Florida. We met a whole bunch of awesome Buick owners, some of their wives, and saw their beautiful cars. It was great!
Beautiful weekend, took a long ride in the GS to check out the changing leaves and a newly constructed covered bridge. Topped of the gas tank with Ethanol free at $4.87/gal . Well worth it to enjoy a nice day.
Nice! Did the same thing but skipped the gas station, too many people. Lol. Had about 10 seconds to snag a bridge pic before getting honked at.
It's been beautiful weather here the last few days and I finally got a chance to play with the Riv. Backed it out of the garage, washed it, drove it around town, filled up with gas, did grocery shopping with the wife, wanted to do one last big fat burnout, wife glared at me while presenting that idea as she didn't want the food to smell and taste like burnt rubber, so burnout canceled, drove home, pulled back into garage, covered car until next year, boo. I envy you southern folk who enjoy their cars all year round.
Painted 3 more major underhood pieces Saturday. Had 2 different body filler cans on hand but both were no good due to age. Off to the supply store tomm.
Broke a friggin 1/4 20 water pump bolt . S-O-B. Kept loosening and tightening slowly for that to not happen and bam. All others were no problem. Did get to drive my X to Auburndale for the bopc show. Great cruising with my buddies. Fernando
My new top plate for my intake arrived today. Now I can run my Enderle Bird Catcher injection on the new 560. Looks similar to this setup. Just about 3.5-4" shorter in height.
Fernando it should put us over 200mph N/A on alchohol. I added more weight to the car so we should be up around 2000lbs. Race ready. I'll pull weight until the car no longer goes straight.
I popped the not-actually-security-bolted wire hubcaps off the wheels of the '70 Riviera to get on with bleeding the brakes (hopefully tomorrow). Still hoping to make it our "trunk or treat" trunk for Saturday. Officially my first real effort on getting it in good order! How exciting! Labeled each cap with the position. Added the receipt for DOT3 to the binder. Feels good to truly start adding to its history. ^_^ Hopeful that it's just a bit of air in a line, though. Not quite ready for bigger stuff until next month. Wish me luck, friends!
Tonight I pulled the distributor from the Buick, disassembled it, put the new vacuum advance in with longer screws, made a new ground wire, installed the new points and condenser, gapped the points to .016 when on the high point of the cam, dropped the distributor back in the car, put the cap back on it, wired the points lead to the white wire from the MSD 6AL, and it fired up after a few minutes with the usual "no-choke" pump and crank session. It got too late to do more, so I had to shut it down for the night. For being cold, it seemed to run much smoother than it did with the electronic module in the distributor. I do need to check the timing and connect the VA again. Here's where it was an hour and a half ago... Next, I may need to make a jumper to bypass the MSD box to run the points right off the Blaster 2 coil. This way I can set the dwell if necessary. I may try to just set the timing, idle, and go with it, since the MSD really controls the dwell, The points just have to open and close to signal the box to fire. I'm going to send the original distributor to Ken at Everyday Performance, to rebuild and recurve for me.
wow! need to bring that 73 to Bowling Green next year for the 50th Anniversary! Let's show off the Colonnades! Fernando
Just enjoyed it. Probably last time out for the year. My wife and I did a color run. 5 stops and about 128 mile drive ending up at Stared Rock State Park in Illinois. Each stop picked up cars and car clubs. Probably ended up with about 500 participants.
So tonight I tried to do some tuning. The timing settings are super sensitive to distributor movement. Next time I get in there, I'm going to give the vacuum advance some more movement. The way it's set now, it only gives me 4 degrees, and it's attached to manifold vacuum. I may have to bypass the MSD box and try to set the dwell, too. All in all, I'm happy with it so far. No more starting problems at all. When it's cold, give the carb a couple pumps and it fires right off. When it's hot, it doesn't even make a whole revolution with the starter and it's running, without even touching the throttle!
Yesterday I found some more parts for my GSX, including a new, in the box ,with the directions and receipt a KB Cool Runner intake.
Update... No need to bypass the MSD box to set dwell. Was reading on a Corvette forum that I just have to connect the negative lead from the dwell meter, to the signal input wire (white) where the points lead connects to it. This way you read the dwell on the points and not the dwell from the MSD 6AL box. Nice!!!
Carved out this little emblem from the center of a hood ornament and stuck it to my valve cover. Snagged a non leaking washer fluid reservoir from a parts car and installed it then put the hood back on the car. Went for a short blast up n down my road. Love the way the car runs , hate the valve noise. May try a different set of rockers to see if it helps.
Prepped for the last drag race of the season. Filled up on racing fuel and nitrous. Weather is going to be perfect.
