How you guys been? I sold my R/T that had been in body shop prision for a few years. I got so disgusted by the whole ordeal that I couldn't even muster the energy to post even a smart ass comment about Miller. Well it's time to get going on a car. I did the Hemi thing for the last few years in the Road Runner and although fun and fast it left me longing for the simpler times of an RB, The 6 Barrel in the Road Runner was good and trouble free for the most part, But still just left me feeling kinda empty. So if a Hemi and 6BBL don't do it then what? I had the most fun in the old days bangin' gears in my 383 cars.... So what is a boy to do? There is a Sunfire Yella' 383 Fo-gear bucket seat console car with my name on it in Texas. Numbers matching engine/trans and rust free. What is the low ET for a 383 car at the PS drags? Has anyone ever certified a low deck Mopar?

    Hey Mike,

Is the car in Texas a Bee or Bird? If you don't buy it, shoot me a PM. :TU:

Welcome back, Mike. I've missed the gin-drinking cat. Every time I see him, I get jealous that I don't have his job.

The first family car I drove as a teen was a '71 Plymouth Fury Custom Suburban wagon with a 383 2-bbl. It impressed this 16-year old. If a stock 383 could motivate such a land-yacht as well as it did, I think an even stocker 383 might be just the ticket for a Road Runner. Go for it!

I can see you in a big station wagon like that. Did it have the hipo woodgrain on it? Luggage rack? :moonu: :moonu:

Welcome back, Mike. We're all still here. Less hair on top of the head, more on the bottom of the head. Maybe an extra pound or two.

I wonder how one of Bob K's 6 pack cams would work in a 383? :Do No:

Woodgrain between the tail lights (as I recall), but not on the sides. Just acres of green instead. Luggage rack was regularly occupied by a large farbric carrier with big, bold, black and white houndstooth pattern. On one family trip out west, I made my dad buy deer antlers at a gas station, which we bungee-corded to the front of the carrier. Chevy Chase ain't got nothing on us!

The family car I really wish dad kept? '64 Dodge Dart wagon with slant 6 and 3 on the tree.

A couple of teens in the neighborhood, their dad ran the service department at the local Mopar dealer. He bought them each a Road Runner. Probably 383s. I don't remember no 6-packs or lumpy cams, but I do remember the cute horn.

Hoo Boy. The bone stock 383 B-bodies I recall from the PSMCDR were pure stones. Low 15's at best. A 1969 383 Runner and a 1968 383 Charger. But I bet you can tune 'em up better than that. Just remember, they ALL came with front anti-roll bars............

that's not all they came with!

Have to agree the 383 Roadrunners and Superbees were easy prey on the streets around Lansing years ago for the Ramrod and the 421 Catalina.

The stock 383 in my 2900# Valiant really was exciting, though. Under 3100# with me in it, too!   That car also really woke up with a large Holley DP injection in place of the AFB. Had to add an electric fuel pump to keep up, though.

Seem to recall the 69 and 70 had much better breathing heads on them than the earlier ones, right? Mine was a stock 66 4 speed, 3.91 Suregrip. I agree with you Mike, the mid 13's to mid 14's 4 speed cars are a lot of fun.....if you leave them alone. :3gears:

Add 1968 to the "906" casting head. All heads on BB's from 1968-mid 1971? are 906 castings. Didn't matter if it was a 6 pack car or Granny's 383 2bbl Newport. I get a kick outa guys who tell me "Ya my Charger had the special MAGNUM HEADS"... Uh...OK ya those are rare :Dou:

1967 "915" casting heads on the R/T's and GTX 440's were basically the same as the 906's with closed chamber's

1971 and up a few years got 952's. basically 906's with electro-hardened seats. Flow in stock form was the same give or take a CFM here or there.

1967 and earlier Non(915 closed chamber) heads are nothing special .

I have seen alot of 15 second stock 383's... Biggest mistake with a 383 is thinking you can drive it like a "Big Block". A 383 needs to be driven like a rental car small block with the extra insurance :TU: A 4 speed makes it so much easier to wring out every bit of performance. Given the fact that a 383 and a 440HP have the same heads and exhaust manifolds the 383 is not handicapped to the same degree that a 440 is in stock form. It is however built to the same level of "overbuilt " as a 6 pack or Max Wedge. Given it's lower HP levels they are basically indesructable and with good valve springs and ignition are pretty happy being shifted @ 6500-6800. Me and my Brother always use to have 383 cars and we got pretty good at squeezing out all they had to offer. I am looking forward to this project and putting alot of effort into a properly built 383. I'm not sure if I can get one into the 12's in PS legal form, But 13-teens to 13.20's is my goal.
