That sounds like a lot of guys that like to take their W31's, lower the compression to use pump gas, set back the timing to avoid ping, then put in a high 3.08 or 3.23 rear end to get better gas mileage. Then wonder what they need to do to run 13's, but of course not change the C.R. or gear. :Dou:

Your head summary makes sense. My 383 in that Valiant was all done ar 5200-5500, but had stock 1966 heads, valves, cam, etc. Still ran high 12's in that light car. Just don't try to stop (stock Valiant drums up front, big car on the rear) or turn (fenderwell headers went between the tires and the frame and was tight even with 2 inch offset reversed wheels). With the torsion bars wound all the way up, it also had a tendency to change lanes every now and then on its own. Best to let it "have its head" as correcting it is just as dangerous.

Actually it was best to do what I did: Sell it. (Bought my wife's engagement ring with the proceeds) Kept me out of jail, and let me live to a much longer life. Both were a threat driving that coffin.

As a single guy, I've always heard that married men don't actually live longer, it just seems that way.

i talked to Bob about his cam last year at carlisle and he thinks a little green dart would get into stroker boy territory with one of his cams , and some 4.89 's :3gears:

good to see you back , so far my anemic 383 dart has seen 14.23 , close to 98.5mph , i think i'm going to the track later this week for one more shot at 13.99 with the new 2.5" exh before i retire the stock drivetrain .

You can buy a stock cam right out of the Direct Connection catalog. Why wouldn't you just do that ??? Something different about Bob's cam that is Super-Top-Secret ??? :Do No:

    Loaded leather interior car.

As I recall in the mid 80's the Casey '70 Charger went a best of 14.20's to 14.30's with a very slap happy 383.

I had turned him on to .005" over rings for his ultra low dollar freshen of a very tired standard bore 383.

On two or three cylinders he didn't have to file them!

The .020" .030" crank just reduced bearing speed.

Another 14.20 stock 383.... :TU: We have always wondered what somebody would have to do to a stock 383 to get it to run a mid 15 ET :Do No: I'm not even sure you could say that we "Tuned/Tweaked it to run a 14.20". I think it's more like "What the heck did you do to your car to make it run a 15". Either that or they must be afraid to drive it hard

And I was just a wee lad at the time. I didn't know what I was getting into, but decided to go with on-the-job training and learn. That was also the first time I ever "tuned" or got into an AVS carb. The skirts of the pistons were collapsed from the God-knows-what piston to wall clearance. I didn't care. I just wanted to have fun with the car. As a matter of fact, it is still assembled that way today ....... I keep threatening to get it out of moth balls and have fun with it again. Plus - I'd like to think that I'm a little more knowledgeable now. :puzzled: That's debateable ........

Mike after I bought the dart I changed the intake gasket and rebuilt the carb because the accel pump was shot and it wouldn't start once the temp fell below 50 degrees . when I told Jim Rhinehart (Rhinodart , I bought the car from him) how fast I went with it he told me the last time he saw the car run it only mustered a 16 something

casey , that cam question is pretty funny coming from you :moonu:

Hey - I'm not the one with a camshaft that is considered stock when you can leaf thru a Direct Connection catalog and have one shipped to your doorstep with a factory P/N on it.

Hence forth: All the cams that I design for customers will be known as "CM" cams.

PS - I had a 440+6 '70 Roadrunner that I did a cam for that went 11.70's in a customer car. Stock manifolds - no porting. :moonu:

    Hey Mike,
Its good to see you're back.I hope the cause of your absence is behind you. This board just isn't the same without the usual Wowk hijinx.

I too have plans on a low decker.Compression is pretty low typically.Especially for what I have plans for,72 400 4sp.Not looking to set any records just something else to pound the death out of.We'll see

Speaking of "signature series" engine parts...

I'm having visions of grandure here, and I think us big block Chevy guys need to get in on these "stocker than stock" engine parts too...I'll do all the leg work, as long as none of y'all forget me whenever you start dropping tenths...I can see it now, the "RC" Cola crankshaft!

You Chevy boys can thank me later...
