Hey guys I have a 68 riviera that has a pretty straight body that is just running primer only right now. I dont have money to get it really painted and their are a couple spots in the primer that are gonna start messing up soon with all this rain and I want a quick fix. My question is can i just spray over it with some flat black spray cans for now or will that make it a lot more work in the future when i get it seriously painted?
If it wont, about how many cans would I need? Any particular application tips?

I do not think it will hurt anything. You want to prevent corrosion so go for it. No idea on how much you need. Depends on size of area. Just buy common brand of paint so you can just buy more if you need it. Pretty simple.

I would suggest gloss paint for better water repellent properties versus flat.

House paint with a roller, put on a few coats and sand it smooth. If you do a Google you should find car painting with a roller, it's been done.

i was kind of thinking the same thing...is there a certain application technique to make sure that the gloss doesnt show up uneven?
can i do a flat black and then some sort of sealant spray paint on top?

Yea it can be hard to make gloss blend in over matte, and what you want will work. I always got a 99centcan of walmart matte black to keep my rims fresh.

i like the roller method and i have been researching and i have seen some amazing results. i just cant really seem to get a solid time on how long it would take. i would be painting my car black. could i get it done in a weekend? also...with the wetsanding...do i put down 2 coats...wet sand with a like 100 then put another then wetsand with like 1200 over and over until about 1500? also...on the last one do i wet sand it then leave it and buff it later? how long would i have to wait to buff it?
if it has primer on it now...even though its pretty straight should i sand it before i start?

You should be able to start painting right away, over the primer, just make sure that there is not any dust/dirt on it and you should be good.

sweet im gonna start tonight i guess just on the trunk. when mixing the mineral spirits do i have to mix all of the paint with it at once to avoid getting different shades or will it work out?

also do i go from like a 1000 to a 1200 right after the first 2 coats or would i do the first 2, wet sand with 1000 do another 2 then wet sand again with 1200 etc?

Wet sanding should be the last steps in finishing the paint. Do a few coats then wetsand it.

i read that whole thread and i still only have one question left
how long after the final coat is done do i have to wait to buff it?

If you are painting it a flat black, you really should not buff it. Just make sure that it is nice and smooth.

The wax will make the flat black have a milky look to it, and it will never go away.

    im painting it gloss black.

i started a couple hours ago. 2 really thin coats starting with the trunk and got all the way up to the doors. its raining and everything so the air is pretty moist. i masked off all the chrome and took off emblems. its hard to get around the chrome with the brushes but it just takes time. im gonna do the front half tomorrow and let it dry till friday. no rush really. the only thing im worried about is that im doing 1 half at a time but i think it will come out fine. the rest of the coats are all going to be over the entire car at one time.

A friend of mine would paint all his own cars when they got to be in bad shape from rust or accidents etc.

he would use Tremclad/Rustoleum rust paint
he would heat it up on the stove a little to make it thin a little and then use a good quality roller.
Once done it would be glossy just like sprayed paint.

hey guys just finished the front half now the car is completely covered...
this is definitely a big learning experience. When they say to do thin coats they're not exaggerating. I learned my mistake on the trunk because I did it a lot thicker than it needs to be so there will probably be a lot of sanding work there.
I used literally less than a quarter cup of mineral spirits and the same amount of rustoleum and covered the entire front half and top in a perfect thin layer

ill be posting pictures in a little.

this is going to be a lot of work but definitely worth it. I can tell its gonna look really good.
