It was in a 69 Fury III 4 door. The car had terminal Michigan cancer so I did what any surgeon would do and started cutting it out. First go around left me with something that looked like a 4 door Camino. After another winter the trunk portion was falling off so I bob tailed it. Would go through the 4x4 trails and mud holes n beat the snot outta it in low gear. Lots of high RPM mud slinging. A rod let go and punched through the left side of the block. Drove home on 5 cylinders with a bad miss. Bought a junk Aspin a few days later n swapped in that slant. Drove that car until it broke in 1/2.
Took mine in a 1965 Plymouth Fury III with a 383, 2 barrel, with a cast iron dual point distributor in 1971, was the family car that my two older brothers shared, (transplanted the dual point to my ‘69 Roadrunner, my first car, paid $600 for in 1976).
Well isn't this an interesting thread. Some of you guys tested in some real tanks! Took mine in a 70 Bronco in 1977 with a 3 on the tree and an incredibly tight turning radius "for the 3 point turn part of test". I had been driving it around home on backroads since age 11. I thought I was a smartass and would easily ace the test. Officer said "OK go up and make a 3 point turn" which I did exactly that. Unfortunately there was a stop sign between me and the turning spot I did not see.
So we were asking about the first time we got our license right?.... Horsepower took mine early... 2nd time was in my 72 Vista Cruiser. It was an ex Winter Nationals tow car. Had stickers in the windshield from 72-73-74-75 and 76. Stripper 455 wagon with Cragers bench seat posi and nothing else.
I had the pleasure of taking mine in 1986 at the local police station with my dad's 1971 Skylark with 455 transplant, 118 cam, and M/T Headers. Ran high 12's at the time and still had the air conditioning. I was so nervous, i forgot to turn the AC on and it was about 90F that day. I will never forget what a lucky kid I was.
A 1959 Chevy Impala, my first car that my father bought me in 1966. He grew up without a car and went into WW II when he was just 17, fought in the Pacific. He vowed he would buy his children their first car he did as I have done with mine. I kid with my son that this Buick will go to my granddaughter when i'm gone. She likes that idea too!!
In a power blue 86 Ford Escort (not an actual photo) cause I don’t think anyone ever took a picture of it cause it was hideous. About 6 months later I ran it into a curb and bent the frame. Boy was my dad pissed. The ol dog ran out in front of me didn’t work. He knew I was trying to do donuts, aka drifting. Didn’t corner as I expected
My dad's 1977 Cutlass with an Olds 350 with 4bbl. It was the summer of 1982. Wow, I've been driving legally for almost 40 years. I first drove on my own when I was 11 or 12 when dad wanted to take two trucks to get firewood. We lived on a gravel road so I followed him in our 1968 GMC pickup that was yellow and white with a lighted goose hood ornament.
In '67 I failed the first time because the turn signal failed on my Friend/neighbor's '61 pale yellow Electra 4dr. She took me out driving for hours in it with zero problems. Test dude wouldn't let me hand signal. Went back with my Dad's Midnight Blue '66 Ford Custom 500 2dr. sedan. Aced it.
summer 1968 I think - '63 impala 2dr . looked nice , just out of the body shop . dad hit a bridge coming home late one night after work . "deer ran out in front of me" . hmmmmmm . no turn signals and dif front and rear license plates , yikes . glad he didn't look too close . passed first shot .
Spring 1981 : ‘68 Bel Air station wagon with manual everything and a three on the tree. $300 car my older brother owned a half share and I the other. Drove myself solo to the DMV, parental presence - signature not required. No insurance on the car, wasn’t compulsory in Colorado at the time. Learners permit and vehicle registration, good to go! Passed the test and burned the last cash in my pocket on gas driving around all afternoon legal for the very first time! Yikes, I could’ve been driving in YOUR neighborhood! A very sweet memory of youth ........ how could that possibly have been 40 years ago already ...... Steve weim55 Colorado
1968 Pontiac excecutive. 2 door hardtop dark green. Was my great grandmother You could lay down in the trunk and wouldn’t touch the sides either direction.
1977 took my test in Mom's 71 Valiant 4-door with the "leaning Tower of Power" slant 6. Color and wheels were like this one:
