OK, here is the next problem child. Does anyone know where I can find any of these. They are the spring clips that hold the Trim Rings on the Hurst Wheels. I am striking out with finding these, and the last set I could find were sold in 2016. The wheels are certainly beautiful, but working with rare "ancient" aftermarket parts is a real PITA. If I can't find them it looks like I will be making around 20 of the little buggers. Duane
I know Ames sells the rings, maybe they have them? How about Pete Serio...Precision Pontiac. He's a shifter guy but has a lot of Hurst stuff and maybe he can hook you up? 'Course 20 is a LOT of them!
Ok...yeah...I see them. These are NG? http://www.gtoman.com/inventory/index.cgi?days=1000000000&parttype=Wheels+&+Brakes
Frank, Been to all those places, and there is nothing. From what I understand "The Performance Years" had them and was bought out by Ames, but the clips are not listed in their catalogue. I need to get a few more things from Ames so I am hoping to talk to someone there about the clips. You can't buy the special Hurst lug nuts anywhere either. There is a GTO vender selling a set of 4 polished original vintage wheels with new centers and trim rings for something like $4700, but with NO lug nuts, and probably no clips. I don't know how you would plan to mount them. Plus the repro wheels are different, so the lug nuts for the new wheels will not work on original rims. I was fortunate, Jimmy bought a set of 20 lug nuts and I got them with the car. I was hoping to get a few extras but the label was ripped off the box, so I have no where to start looking........and don't even get me started regarding different lug nuts for the thick 5/8" hub vs. the thinner 3/8" hub wheels. Even the Engineers at the Hurst Event didn't have but 1 or 2 lug nuts as examples. They told me at one time they were looking into reproducing them, but the costs were too high. You know even at the Hurst Event at Carlisle, there was not a single car there with the Hurst Wheels. I will try Precision Pontiac, thanks for the lead. Duane
First I want to thank Lou Walchak for rebuilding my Power Steering box. He not only put in new seals but installed new needle bearings as they were falling apart, and he did it all for free. I really appreciate that. Second I want to thank Brian Williams for the horn. It is in very nice shape and included in the box was a Present. I am posting a couple pics of the present. I didn't even know they made them and I really thought it was great. Thanks again guys. Duane
Well being as I am still a kid...................at least at heart, I thank you. I have a question, did you just find this in a store or what? Duane
A quick google for custom spring winding in PA came up with these guys. https://www.diamondwire.com/ You might have to do some more searching for a shop that does prototype quantities. Doesn't hurt to give them a call and see if they can help you.
Hi Duane, I am glad the horn will work for you. The diecast car I got a couple years ago, I think it was Toys R Us. I thought you guys might need a little inspiration. It’s kinda neat seeing a model just like my car. I have two more just like it , one for whoever buys my car and one to keep. Keep up the great work on the Motion Buick you’re making us stepchildren proud!
Thanks Brian, Here's an update, Nick has been wet sanding the shell, including the doors and trunk lid, and should be done with it by the end of today. Then he will be working on the front fenders and hood. The vinyl top and headliner are scheduled to be installed either the end of this week or next Monday at the latest. Then I will be taking a week off and we plan on Throwing parts on the car. I am still working on sub-assemblies and am still polishing the glass, but that's the plan.................... Duane
In the first couple posts there are pictures of the frame- it looks like it was painted already? Cheers. Ted
Ted, The frame, upper/lower front control arms, rear upper/lower trailing arms, the trans cross member with end caps, rear sway bar, and the rear stiffeners were all powder coated when I purchased the car. The F&R springs were new, the trans was all rebuilt, and the rear was all new inside and the housing was painted as well. The rolling chassis with the exception of the front sway bar and power steering box were either new/rebuilt/ or powder coated, as well as new ball joints, bushings, body mounts, brakes, etc.. All that and many more finished/new parts were included with the price of the car. The rolling chassis was virtually an assembly job. If you go to the thread 1969 Motion Buick GS400 you will see pics of all the parts I got with the car. There are over 180 pics. Duane
Here's a few pics from Nick today. He has the entire shell including doors and trunk lid sanded and polished. Enjoy. Duane
Incredible workmanship. Great job Nick. Now do you think you can do cars this fast every time lol. I think after doing this one you will be bombarded with requests to do "Quick" restorations. I also think you may need a vacation after all the work your putting into this one.
Cheers Duane, car looks great,I saw on a gto forum that todds gtos in California has the Hurst clips . It's an older post but I got my fingers crossed 1-818-879-3965 Good luck .Tim
Thanks Tim, I will check it out. Ritchie says you are having fun touring. Good for you. Your car found the right owner. Duane
Here are some pics of the shell in the sun. You get a better idea of the real color with these pics. Sure looks a bit different then it did less then 3 months ago. Duane View attachment 400460 View attachment 400461 View attachment 400462 View attachment 400463
