Thanks. What's amazing to me is that no matter how nice the car is that you buy, there's always a list of stuff that needs attending to.

You might be surprised if you made sure your total timing was 32*, and had it all in at 2000. The trap speed might be a little optimistic, maybe not.

When I sold everything (GS's, parts) years ago, I thought if I get back into cars, which I finally am now, and despite that I have more or less a clean slate and could get into any make I've been drawn back to GS's, that I'd wind up buying a done car (or a super nice original) but what you said is exactly what scares me about that. What was done, was it done right, and will it still have a list of stuff to do, so I'm going to try another project:Dou:. I may be out of my mind too, but we'll see if I have the time and still have the patience. Looking for a nice driver too just in case:). Haven't driven a GS in SO long and there's a track 15 min. from our new house. I could almost come home between rounds.

BTW, car looks SWEET Jason! Love that color and like I said, reminds me of my first GS. I think it ran low 16's at the '85 GS Nationals. My '70 350 4-sp. loved gears. Stock 3.23. Picked up significantly with 3.42 & even more with 3.73.

Ive never bought a car that needed nothing. That being said, the 72 really didn't have anything major wrong with it. I basically bought it, put plates on it and drove it 6 hours round trip. It just needed alot of nick picky stuff and fine tuning. Lots of little weekend, afternoon projects which I'm OK with. Many of them didn't cost me a thing. Like re-striping the rockers- took me a couple of hours in the afternoon. Another project on the books is to swap out the AM radio for an AM/FM and replace the original front speaker- another afternoon project. These are the cars I like buying. Buying an expensive project car that you cant drive on day 1 isn't really fun anymore for me.

You know, writing this gives me an idea- I should write an article about this:idea2:. I'll call it the "Top 100 weekend projects you can do on your 70-72 GS"

Even my 70 GS which Ive had for 12 years now and have gone though front to back still has a "to do" list on it. Water pump bearing has a little play in it, front drums need to come off this winter and get re-lined, the G60's are 10 years old, the Muncie is leaking, the Hurst shifter needs a rebuild, still have to spatter paint the trunk. No matter how nice they are, they're still 40+ year old cars

    They're never done!!!!

I like you're idea on the top 100! Like the radio resto. you linked me to a while back.

What you have is exactly what I had in mind. I am also going to get another car that I could drive on day one and do some little things to to improve like yours (like we used to as teenagers when these cars were readily available in the Sunday paper), which of course can get out of control quickly when you have OCD, but you're right they're never done and if the project gets "done" to the level of it not needing really much of anything then you're scared to death to drive it.

I guess I'm curious if I can still do a project and bring this poor car back to life - I think very few would attempt this one. Just picked up a 71 GS 350 vert #'s matching basket case - 1st GS I've bought in a LONG time. It will be a sheetmetal job of epic proportions, but I like doing that work. I could also be NUTS and I'm still evaluating whether to tackle it, sell it as a project, or part it, but I'm leaning towards tackling it. Someone started the sheetmetal, albeit poorly, so all I'll have into it is some time for a while undoing what they did and re-doing it correctly. I can't really hurt the value and can always get out of what I paid if I part it, so it'll be a good test.

BTW, if anyone has a vert parts car, I think I'm going to need a couple rusty quarters. Just the top sections so I have something to splice hardtop quarters to. They trimmed what's there SO far back I'm not sure I can make it work plus one quarter was apparently replaced early in the cars life due to an accident (with a real GM vert qtr) and it was a typical (crappy) body shop job.

Good meeting you Bill! :beer Not a speck of rust on it!!!

Im actually in the middle of refinishing the grill and headlight bezels on it. The grill was looking a little shabby. Bezels are done, grill has been wet sanded and a small chip repaired. Hopefully I'll get some color on it this week.

I have to sideline the 72 for a bit and get to some projects on the other cars. Jennifer has me replacing steel brake lines on her 86 GT (so much fun:() , I need to throw a water pump on the Aquamist 70, address the timing cover issue on the beater 70 and give the Riviera and the 71 some exercise. Plus the truck has a random misfire I need to fix. Too many cars!!!!

    Jason, yours possibly?

Actually I misread - thiught he was looking for a car he had sold (or is that your ad?)

Was going to introduce myself @ Cecil, but you (at least I think it was) & Duane were looking over your car (assuming you had the '72 there) and I never got back over - Stopped up on my way to work and only stayed for a couple hours.

Hi Jason-What is the difference in street manners & idle quality between a Stage 1 and a stock 455?

Does the Stage 1 have a lumpy cam rock, louder exhaust or unsmooth idle?

    Thanks

Bet you couldn't tell the difference. The factory cam is downright mild compared to what you can get today.

Yeah, that's my ad. Figured it couldn't hurt to put up an ad looking for previous owners. maybe someone will read it and remember the car from the area.

You should of came over! I asked Duane to look the car over and check date codes and what not to make sure everything was correct on it. Passed the test! :beer

I didn't want to interrupt - especially when you can get Duane's personal attention for a bit & I figured I'd get back over. I had a chance to talk to him as well - I stumped him on a data tag issue! I'll have to post a thread on here. Looked like you were engulfed in checking codes:). We'll catch up before too long. Saw the Aquamist beauty on FB - Nice!

Ok, after a whole bunch of wet sanding, taping and spraying, the original gray plastic grill is finished. The grill had the original paint on it, but it just looked shabby compared to the rest of the car. There was only one small chip that needed repairing. No other damage or defects. I also refinished the black inside the headlight bezels. Im hoping to get them all back on this weekend
