So after much detective work and phone calls, I managed to get ahold of the guy that my friend bought the GS from. I called Steve who lives in Arizona. He said he bought the car from a "flipper" in San Diego. Him and his father went there, picked it up and drove it back to Phoenix. I Googled it and it a 5 hour trip by car. He literally couldn't believe I was calling him! Guy almost dropped the phone. He said he really regretted selling it and it was one of the best cars he ever had. To show you what a small world it really is, he told me he and his wife both grew up on LI not far from where I live. Incredible. Super nice guy who was genuinely happy I called. I assured him that the car was in good hands. He said he would look around for any paperwork from the previous guy or any pictures from when he owned it. Naturally, he told me to keep in touch with him and if I ever sell it, to please call him. Love stuff like this. Im always amazed how you can talk to a complete stranger on the phone for a half hour like you know each other just because your car guys
Got the refinished grill installed with the headlight bezels today and made the final adjustment to the front bumper. I went ahead and refinished the cross bars and center grill support while I was at it. Really came out nice. The front end really pops now. Went for a cruise afterwards and ready to put her away And the finishing touch was installing the factory demo tape in the 8 track. Funny, I stuck it in all the way by accident, so when I started the car, the tape started to play. I guess it works!
I got a present delivered to me on Sunday morning. My friend who sold me the car stopped by to deliver a dusty old box he had gotten when he bought the car. He said, "this goes with the car". Box looked like it had been through a war and in magic marker said, "72 Buick GS parts- do not throw away". In it was all the original smog equipment- air pump, diverter valve, original GM fan belt, hose with date coded clamps, elbow and check valve. I figured all this stuff was long gone. Smog pump spins free. Im going to get the pump and valve redone and reinstall it come spring. Also in the box was the original, OE fan clutch. Tough stuff to find these days! Awesome!!!
Wow! That's quite the gift. Btw, I'll say 16.2 if you run it. I think that's about what mine ran the only time I ever ran it way back when @ the '85 Nationals.
My 72 GS 350 ran 15.5. Taking it out again this FRIDAY. Adjusted timing to 34.5* at 2500 rpm. Yours will do better than 16.2!
Interesting. I had two different '72 Olds 350s. One we bought new (4bbl option) the other I bought used -also a 4bbl car. Neither had smog pumps.
