James, What exactly was the option package on the Zone Office Cars? I have heard they were pretty well loaded with options but what specifically were the options?

The 71's were all optioned the same with:

    Stage 1
    TH 400
    3.42 posi
    Power disc brakes
    Power Steering
    AM radio with rear speaker
    N25 exhaust
    G60 15's with chrome 15x7 rally wheels
    F41 rally ride suspension
    Air conditioning
    Custom front shoulder seat belts
    Speed alert
    Tinted glass
    Front and rear bumper guards
    Sport mirrors
    Power bench seat
    Power windows
    Power locks
    Cruise control
    Tilt steering
    Convenience group lighting
    Tach and gauges
    Rally steering wheel
    Fold down armrest bench seat

Based on Gary's info, the 72's were optioned with the above except the F41 suspension, front shoulder set belts, tinted glass (windshield only), speed alert, power windows/locks/seat, cruise, or tach. It looks like they did have an 8 track, rally clock, and fast variable ratio steering.

James , were they all convertibles? I assume they were. I have a friend who owns a Cortez gold stage 1 hardtop that is loaded. If i recall correctly it has all those options and buckets & full length console. I'm not sure what type of radio it has, it may be AM FM. Is there any chance that this could be a zone office car??

Yes, they were all convertibles (as far as I know).

If you can PM me his body #, VIN #, and build date it will help rule it out or possibly add a twist.

James I'll be seeing him in the next few weeks and I'll get the body number and VIN for you then.

James - i don't know if this has been posted but a few years ago I went to Floyd Garrett's Muscle Car Museum in Tennessee and there was a cortez gold 1971 GS Stage 1 convert there next to a 87 GNX. I don't know if it was one of these or not...I might have some pics. You can see the rear quarter of it if you go to their website and look in the gallery pics...it's in the one with the blue 71 Cuda convert...

Thanks for the lead Lon. Yes, that is also one of the Zone cars that is owned by a board member that has has shared his info with me and other valuable information as well. I've also seen it in the museum back in 2006 and it is a nice car indeed.

Keep the leads coming, guys. :TU:

Jmaes, I spoke with my friend Bill who has the hardtop cortez gold stage 1 and his option load is the same as the list you posted above with the exception of buckets and console which is understandable considering his is a hardtop. His car is an early build, August of 1970. If you'd like I can put you guys in touch and you can discuss his car.

I owned a 71 Stage1 convert zone car from 1984 to 1989 that is probably not on your list. The person who bought it from me still has what is left of it as it was severely damaged in a fire back in 1999. It was just like the others, cortez gold, white, loaded. I remember it having conceivably every option except it just had an AM radio which I thought was odd. It also had the speedminder speedometer. I remember it was an August built car, likely an 08E and the last five of the vin was either 00927, 00937, or 00987. I am going off of memory on the vin.

Here is a picture at a car show circa 1985. The Cragers were on it when I bought it. I added the correct 15x7s later.

Thanks for your post. Is there any chance you can get the VIN and body number/cowl tag data?

I will work on it but it may take a little time for me to hook up with the current owner.

This might not be particularly helpful, but when I was looking for a GS last year, the owner of one of the cars I looked at told me about a 71 Stage 1 convertible that was Gold/White/White back in the early 90's near Pittsboro NC. He didn't know the owner but the said the car was for sale for quite some time at a very high price, disappearing around 98'. Good luck with the search.

I followed up with the current (now previous) owner of the car last weekend and found that he had sold it a few months ago after owning it for 25 years. I talked to the new owner, who just joined here, and mentioned this thread. It sounds like he has contacted you already. The car is under restoration and it sounds like it was in decent shape after all. I am glad someone is finally bringing her back.

Yes, he contacted me and gave me the info on your old car. Thank you for all your help.

I now have info on 11 of the 1971 Zone Office cars. :TU:

Strange, I also have verified that 11 of the 1972 Zone Office cars still exist. I'd be willing to bet there were 25 built in '71 just as in '72.

I'm tracking the orange '72s, James is tracking the gold '71s. I do plan to be at BG, but a certain black car will still be sitting in my garage.
