About 45mins ago, my father called me up, told me he was at the scrap metal yard in Santa Fe, Texas and they had a 1966 Buick Riviera GS sitting off to the side and for me to hurry up and get over there. So, I rushed over there and sure enough, a beat up version of my Riviera was sitting off to the side. Same color and everything. I walked up to it to check it out. The rear 1/4's were beat up, and it was missing a motor. It did have ALOT of good parts that I need for mine.
So, me and my father walked up to the guy running the crane and asked him if they would sell parts off the car. With an attitude, he said NO. I then said, will you sell the whole car? He said NO I WILL NOT! I then said, ill give you the price of double its weight in metal for the car. Again he refused with a serious butthole attitude. I then made my final offer, I offered to pay him 3 times the amount they paid for the car plus $1000.00, and I would GIVE the car back to them after I got the parts I needed off of it. He still refused. I went into the office and presented my offers to them. They flat out told me NO. I looked out the window and the guy opperating the crane, climbed back up in the crane, drove all the way to the other side and purposely picked the car up destroying the roof, the perfect glass in it, and everything else. He picked it up in the air, then let it drop. Then picked it up again and crushed it with the claw on his crane. Then flipped it up on the drivers side and drug it back and forth across the ground. Picked it up again and dropped it on its side. Then dropped the claw hook onto the drivers side, flipped it over and drug it across the ground again. He put on a 15 minute show just being a ass about it totally destroying every ounce of metal on it that was worth something. Just because I wanted it. It was a really messed up deal because the car could have been saved, or parted out for alot of good parts on it. AND he could have made a decent chunk of money off the car and still got the car back as scrap metal in the end. I do not understand some people sometimes. I really didnt see the point in him giving me an attitude about it. I wanted to beat the crap out of him so bad, but I was the bigger person about it and walked off.. There was nothing I could do.

Sounds like a jack hole of a person to me. Im glad you walked away from it, I would've been more likely to be the smaller one and start a fight, but I am glad you didn't. What a jerk. :af:

Well. I concealed my anger as long as I could. If anyone wants to go by there, just follow the black tire marks exiting the entrance way and out onto the street...

I dont know where you are from, but I was told once a car is taken to the junk yard it is illegal to resell it to the public. At least thats what my father and I were told. We live in PA.

That could be the issue, but I think they could have explained that in the beginning rather than being a jerk about it by destroying the car right in front of me on purpose.

    Thanks for the info...

    Oh yea, im in Tx.

Newberry's and rairden's junkyards both will sell a whole car to anyone if they want it or need it. The real issue is getting the title back, which once taken to a junkyard, will never be clear again, but you can still drive it with a copied title, but when it comes to value, the car will never be able to bring the value like it could with a "clear" title. I could buy a '76 century from rairdens for a parts car, but it is underneath a whole bunch of cars in which he said it would cost extra to move the other cars away from it.

Happened to me with a 67 Mustang fastback  But think about it - there are other cars and parts out there, and their stupidity just cost them $1000+!!!! :Dou:

Do what I did - tomorrow, call and ask for the owner, then point out the above lost $$$ :Brow: When I called, the owner didn't know what his guys were doing, and wasn't too happy about it... :Brow: A$$holes... :spank:

As far as I know, there's no law in TX about scrappers not reselling cars. I do know that you can buy a car from a wrecking yard, but you may or may not get clear title...wouldn't think a scrapyard would be any different.

I like James' idea. Call the owner and let him know. I bet he'll be pi$$ed.

There's a a junkyard in Hollis Queens ( a really bad area) that has a 62(?) Corvette convertible sitting way on top of a container. Been there for years and years. Ive heard it's been there for 25-30 years. You can see it from the train as you pass by. From what I hear, they refuse to sell the car because it was the first car to enter the junkyard. Seems there is a custom of keeping the first car to enter a new junkyard. Its supposedly bad luck to sell it. It would figure it would be a Corvette convertible. :Dou:

I drove to middle North Carolina to buy parts from a guy one time. He had found a 66 GS Riv at the local scrap yard. It was being carried to the crusher as he drove by. He darted in and stopped the loader operator to ask if any parts could be removed. He offered $50 to the driver who sat it aside and allowed the man 1 day to pull all the parts he could in that time. He got a 342 posi, dash with cruise control, emblems (including glovebox), cornering lights among other things. My brother and myself bought all he had for a few hundred dollars. This man was a Ford guy! He just saw a cool looking car about to be destroyed and stopped to see what it was. We need more people like him and the loader operator! Sorry you encountered that dick who wouldn't let you do the same.

I have scene that car at that junkyard before. I heard its not illegal to sell a car from a scrapyard before. Its just a shame that the guy wouldn't sell you the car. Maybe he just hates Buicks?

Or get his fax number, And a couple pieces of black paper and create a loop that runs through your fax machine. Then send it to him, that's always funny.

There is no law against selling parts off a car that is in a junkyard if you legally own the car.The guys crushing cars are doing so to make money;so to refuse the money making offer you offered them makes me think that maybe they had obtained the car in a less then a up and up deal and therefore didn't want you to get any parts off it.Overwise it makes no sense to turn down good money by selling a few parts before mashing the car and to help someone out at the same time! I can see if they didn't want to sell the whole car[as maybe the person they bought car from doesn't want something in thier name put back on the road if they sold for junk] but a few parts before being crushed    That makes no sense at all?????????? :Dou:

That's horrible, Brian. I just finished drying my tears for the poor 'ol Rivvy :ball: That's like a knife through your heart to see that being done to such a nice car.

Sounds like those guys hated that car and were bent on destroying it. That's sad, because real GS rivs are hard to find in junkyards with any good parts on them. I've owned mine for a long time, and I've come across that attitude myself a few times from people. Once about 20 yrs. ago when I took my old '66 in for inspection, the station owner told me my car was ugly and looked like the batmobile :af: When I saw his place went out of business a few years later I laughed and actually felt better.

    WHAT A *ASTARD!!
