I dont know where you are from, but I was told once a car is taken to the junk yard it is illegal to resell it to the public. At least thats what my father and I were told. We live in PA.

no, this is only the case with cars that have been certified as totalled by an insurance company. and even then, i believe that only applies to the vin, that basically everything else can be sold as scrap/parts to the general public.

you will often get this answer when looking at a car in a towing companies yard ... they can't sell it because the insurance company requires it to be destroyed.

I know here in Ohio anything is fair game on parts, unless confiscated by the Highway patrol. Those cars are crushed if they contain stolen parts. Abandoned/seized cars cannot be retitled but can be used for parts as was the case when I bought an entire 1971 GS 350 for 600.00. It was abandoned then sold to a crusher to be destroyed. The moron who owned the car put the coil wires on bacwards and it wouldn't run. I took everything off the car that was possible and left then with the cowl and frame.
My 62 Wildcat was easier. I filed for an abandoned title and since it had no liens or records against it the State gave me a salvage title that had to go through BMV inspection. No problem.
My 69 GS 4spd was a salvage car that was restored then wrecked but upon inspection the State Hwy Patrol wanted to keep the cat because they couldn't find the VIN on the engine. Luckily it was a legit numbers car and the tailshaft had the last 8 of the Vin on it.
What a joke! The system tries to keep a set of checks and balances but makes it so hard us old car enthusiasts to even get parts from cars but yet look at ebay and see how many whole cars don't have a title and that's legal?
I know here in Ohio the only way to even crush one without a title is to remove the driveline. What real difference does that make?
I have been in the automotive business for the last 21 yrs and have never seen anything like this. Most of the salvage yars know me by name and call me when something comes in. It is a sad day when someone would intentionally destroy a prize in front of someone willing to use parts from it. :Smarty:
