The first year I took my Buick to Stanton Dave Dudek came up to me and complimented me on how nice my car looked.this is a guy that he has tons more money in his car than i do mine. I was on cloud nine the rest of the weekend.Yes i wish i could be in a magizine but i think that was pretty great to happen. One thing that needs to be remembered when the magizines are in that position 1) they have so many to chose from 2) they are looking for the stand out factor and in this case it is the et's.

This was a bad race year for me for a couple of reasons .... But you'll see the Biscayne (or maybe something else .... :puzzled: ) from me during the 2007 race season. At both the FAST and PS races. As I get older racing this stuff, I have found that I have mellowed a lot. I like 'em all .....

PS -- Rumor has it that in 1971 there was a beer can motor in the car. It was only between the frame rails for a couple of weeks ...... but it did muster a 10.70. :bglasses:

Just to be clear, I have not posted anything derogatory regarding the F.A.S.T. Martin race or the organizers or their view of anyone.

In a nutshell, all that I have posted is that Hot Rod is unlikley to do features on P/S cars.

In fact, past experience is they seem to even be confused that there are two classes.

Also I wouldn't do a Fairlane.....the manifolds are terrible :Brow:

Casey, I have the original ZL-1 paperwork for your car :TU:

Dave, no one is trying to rekindle the Us vs Them crap........ this discussion was just about the media coverage, not the event itself.....

I pitched the "drivers" story at Stanton last year. Seemed like a good idea to do a story on the folks who drive their cars to the race.

No they won't be the fastest because of gearing and fuel but they are neat none the less.

I think at that race there were six cars that I knew of.

    Hot Rod on Martin

I'm sorry I brought it up! I'll never say anything derogatory about HRM again. It's my favorite magazine in the whole world. I have to go now and buy a 20 year subscription. :spank:
Dudeck is correct about how difficult it is to get any coverage from them. We've tried get them to cover Ford Expo's Y block shootout at Columbus, no sale. It's even difficult to get coverage in the Make Specific magazines such as Fast Fords. The sport is so fragmented now that it's going to be all but impossible to ask for more than we got. I guess I'll always be upset with HRM, even though I buy it, because for 40 odd years it's always been biased toward the West Coast. While most of the best racing has happened East of the Mississippi.
This, Martin and Stanton, and probably the other Fast races are exactly what I'm talking about. :) :) It's about the people and the cars not who's got the most money.

1st timer perspective at both events

Since this was my first time racing at both Martin and Stanton, I was not around to see the coverage or lack of coverage but I can tell you I enjoyed both events equally. In the past, I have been a car show person showing a couple of cars at a high level. One being a certain RA 4 Judge that 10 years ago did pretty well nationally and in 2003 a 64 GTO scoring concourse Gold at POCI and at the GTOAA Nats. I still own the 64 and it has never seen any street time and the most fun I have with that car other than the accolades is actually starting it up and driving it to the trailer. Last year I was talked into watching and attended both events. It was like a car show, only you got to see them run and run hard. After attending, I thought it would be fun to run the 68 bird I picked up for my wife. We did the motor as it was very tired and gave it a try. Even though it ran in the 14's, I did not feel out of place nor did anyone make me feel that way at either event. I really enjoyed seeing the FAST car run and the quick 8 on the final day I thought was a great idea but enjoyed the variety and quality of cars at Martin as well (130+ cars).

I can tell you whether at the races or at the National shows I have done in the past that Magazine coverage is a nice bonus to what is going on. I certainly did not race this year to get any, just to have fun with an old car with other people that do the same. Any of you guys that get some extra attention or a photo shoot deserve it and I enjoy reading the articles. I appreciate and truely enjoy the coverage we have and thanks to everyone who puts these events on. :TU:

    some of u r phucked!

Wowzers!!!!!!!!!!! Could'nt find a issue here in Canada yet, so I went to Los Vegas for a week and picked up a couple of copies! WTF is this thread about???? Personally I found the coverage of the race amazing.
One of my concerns was that Matt would do mostly a FAST only coverage, so I got in his face as much as I could to make sure he understood the differences between the classes. Yes, some writers in the past didn't understand the differences and have made some silly comments, but not Matt King!.... and still has not made dumb comments. Did you miss the comment of Bobs car...." in factory Stock running high 11's @120 mph and keeping up with some of the better F.A.S.T entries"!
Three different groups have tried a spring race and all have financially found it not worth doing again. When Year One stepped up to the plate and invited us, Terry and the boyz asked me to look after the PS side of it. The deal was whatever I said goes. Period. So now we have a amazing track to race at and a spring race that we can play at. Hot Rod covered it and we got a PS car on the cover!(congrats Bob). I would have never guessed that would happen! If we want this class to grow, we need coverage. To get people to read, you need something to catch there interest! A stock Hemi Cuda doing 11's will grab someones attention and maybe they will come to the next race. And maybe another magazine will come a check it out. And it's not about the quickest cars. If that was the case, there would not be 136 PS cars at Stanton. This year Stanton will be covered by 6 magazines I'm told. Who would have guessed it. These races have been more than generous to a lot of us. A lot of people have got features outta this deal. Try that going to car shows~! You have to ask yourself "why would Hot Rod even want to cover a stock race. The cover is called Hot Rod.

I gotta do a full mea culpa on the "Feild Filler" thing ......... it was a stupid choice of words on my part.

What I meant was to just say that the slower cars in the field are not always going to be recognized by the media. That is all.

My car is a run of the mill L-79 Corvette that runs high 13's. With the big block hood I am sure more than one person has thought I am running pretty slow for a bb car.........but I am having a great time, I am meeting a lot of interesting new friends, and I got a few more RED LETTER EVENTS on my calander.

I can't imagine what it takes to organize one of these events, try to get car 11 to get to the staging lanes, listen to all the whining and cheater accusations, and resolve all of the disputes, and still be one of the top competitors in either class. My hats are off to everyone involved.

Most of us just show up, pay, race, BBQ, mabe sleep, and then race again...... and we are lucky to do so. I'd hate to be limited to bracket racing on Fart Pipe or Naws Night.........so I sure as hell do not want to seem to be an ingrate because no magazine found my 69th fastest car out of 130 interesting enough to to a five page color spread with pictures of my family in it.

    Hey folks.

Just had to make a comment here. First, I am a newbie, haven't been to a race yet, but am planning on Martin in the spring. And when I come, I will probably have the slowest car there, and that's fine with me. I am not coming for glamor. I am coming to see the other cars run, hopefully be a part of it all, and "hang" with other people as passionate about muscle cars as I am. My motivation has been mainly talking to a few of the guys who race P/S, and their enthusiasm and passion for the comraderie, the event, and the cars (all of them!). As far as the Hot Rod article, I read it, thought it was nice, but also thought it was out of their sandbox since their ad dollars come from the Edelbrocks, Hookers, and Holleys of the world. I guess that makes it a compliment that they would even show. I personally have a lot of respect for the FAST cars and what they are able to do, and the P/S folks for their passion for their cars and the challenge of getting all they can out of their cars without going the FAST route.
Looking forward to June, and YES, I will be driving my car there. It is pretty "milk toast" . I will be running a 1972 Chevelle SS 350 (clone) 4 speed with A/C and a highway gear. Like I said, I don't expect to go fast, I do expect to have fun and get all I can out of the car. I am not afraid of hole shots and powershifts.
I have always had the philosophy that these cars were made to be driven. This car makes that easier, I guess. 8.5:1 compression and a flat cam are pretty forgiving on the street. To me, it's kind of like reliving "the day" when our friday night cars were our daily drivers. This car allows me to have at least a Walter Mitty experience of a muscle car while I'm driving it on vacation and getting a lot of seat time.
My point in all of this, is that from what I have read on this site, and from the few P/S ers that I have talked to and met, I think you have a great thing going here (the mags are a sidebar) and looking forward to experiencing it first hand. I think you'll get more participants from word of mouth, than by mag coverage.
    Thanks,
    Tom Bierbower

    Tom:

You'll fit right in with the group. Your car is very neat, too. There was some chatter a while back about the cars that are driven to the meet, rather than trailered. Not everybody has a traioler and truck to pull them. I think that keeps the numbers down at distant meets. Would be interesting to know how many of the cars at both Martin and Stanton were driven there rather than trailered. I think Rusty still has the long distance award for driving his 69 Hurst from Kansas City and Dave has to be the runnerup in his Chevelle from the St Louis area. He certainly would win it for the total miles if you add all the years together.

I agree about the mag coverage from magazines that primarily are sponsored by aftermarket companies. I can't get any of the Olds specific vendors interested at all in Pure Stock either. Matt King, however, is very good at coverage of any type of event (he came to the Olds Nationals at Norwalk years back when he was with the other mag (Car Craft?). So it's not just advertising money driven, but also for the readers. We sure were excited when he arranged all the cars in our Detroit based Olds club for a big photo shot at the end of the meet, then put it in the magazine with great meet coverage.

You'll have fun, you're not that far from the tracks that if you happen to be a little off on one of those power shifts, someone can help get you home pretty easily.

So, convert your wife's car to a Spyder, turn up the boost (oops....) and bring it on also! :Brow:

Good call, Rob. I went back and reread that and you're right, it's about the same thing.

I did pick one thing up, though, that I had forgot about and that's Black Gold's note about me highjacking threads with Oldsmobile pics. Just to keep him happy, take a peek at the back 40 this year. Going to rivet an old W30 VIN plate on it, make up a good B.S. story about it being found in a South Missouri/Northern Arkansas swamp landfill with a body in the back, then smash it up, set fire to it, and cut off the top. Put it on ebay and see what I get for it. $10k? $15k? Hey that could have been Hoffa!

I am just thrilled to have my pile on a center spread of the biggest car magazine in the WORLD, even if the only way to tell it from a sea of red Super-Bees is from the plates!!! I heard gossip that since Martin updated there track and now most of the big events that were at Stanton are now going to Martin that now the PSMCDR is the biggest event of the year for Stanton!! :Smarty: :eek2: :eek2: Jim

Big money behind Martin now, not so with Stanton. Still family owned and run. Original plan for Martin, when the Canadian investor bought it a few years back, was to also have a roundy-round track, too. Don't think that's started yet. Martin was a total dump before it was sold and completely redone.

Hope Stanton doesn't close down with the loss of business.
