OK well I found something cool and could not say no so I am the proud new adopted father of a 1971 Olds Cutlass S . Thing is solid as the day is long I could not turn it down. Only a 350 2 barrel right now. But buckets & console, the former owner has everything bagged and stored right down to the original carpet . It has 80,000 original miles and has been sitting for tha last 18 years makes it hard to say no. I guess I will be begging uncle Dave to go thru his back garage soon  Here is a few pics..
Way to go, Paul!!!!!! me like mucho! What a great cruiser. Think I've got an intake for you for this, maybe even a rebuildable Q jet core. And maybe an air cleaner, too. Who knows what lurks in that mountain back there...???? Welcome to the Dark Side!!!!! :TU: :TU: :TU:
I don't know if it was an option in the S but I think the guy here at work still has a 455 for sale. Another guy has a 350 also. I can check if you'd like Paul.
Yes check on the 455 for sure I believe it was an option will check with dave he will know for sure. I was already thinking that. Let me know how much. Paul
Only way to get a 455 in 1971 was on a 442 and that's coded in the VIN (344771MXXXXXXX). Yours is a 336771MXXXXXX (Cutlass S). In 1972 it was an option on the Cutlass S, but also coded in the VIN as they started coding engines in the VIN. Think the code for a 72 Cutlass with a standard 455 was U. W30 was an X. 442 was an option (W29) on 72's, but a separate series in 1971. Best you can do and be stock with that car is a 4 barrel, and a good set of duals. A gear really wakes up a 350. T350 trans is a good one, throw in a shift kit. :bglasses:
Congratulations -- and great find, Paul! I see it has the famous Passenger Seat Delete option. Other than the year -- and a disturbing lack of rust -- that looks just like my first car, a '72 Cutlass S Sports (post) Coupe with 350 2 barrel. If that engine has been maintained, you'll get another 80,000 out of it easy. I'm with Dave: keep the 350. There's too many big blocks out there anyway. Add a 4-barrel and you'll have plenty of fun.
Brian: I'm surprised Gary R hasn't jumped all over that 455 for that price. Is it complete ready to drop in and have fun, or needs rebuild and parts missing? Happen to recall what letter code is on the heads or what the VIN stamp said? The last years(75 and 76) weren't as good as the earlier ones. He could probably sell that engine in a minute on Realoldspower.com. Especially if it's complete and even better if it has C through H heads on it.
Is a 350 Pontiac worth anything? Some guy here in town is turning his original '68 'vert into a Pro-Touring ride... uzzled:
OOOPS. Forgot about the SX. Was only available in the 4200 series body style, so still doesn't help Paul here with his fastback body style, but you're absolutely right. In fact, I think you could get a 455 in the Vista Cruisers and maybe even the flattop Cutlass wagons now that you got me thinking. Don't do that. Hurts my brain to have to think again. ou: ou:
Have another beer, that will help the brain ache! :beer Paul, Congrats and hope that rocket doesn't treat you wrong!
Any other info on the motor year? what it came out of? does it run? which heads? Not that I am gonna but if I wanted to clone this car into a 442 or SX what would I need to do hmmmm... Things are getting bad looking for olds and chevy parts on Ebay Oh Boy!!! Never thought that would happen heh heh Thanks Paul
Don't clone into an SX. Wrong body style. 442 would work. Going to put a Chevy motor in it? :bglasses: :bglasses:    Neighbor has a set of headers hanging on the wall off his 70 SS.
