Looks like a black rat snake to me...about the correct size for a full size adult. I've seen bunches of those around here...
I was a black rat snake and it can bite but no dangerous enough to kill but the bite will actually fester /infect so bad you may need a prescription to get it to go away.

what is psycotic about saying it is foolish to kill something for no reason other than because it scared you? Is there a difference between snakes and cats? who decides what is worthy of living? go shoot deer and stuff, cool i love venison, but that has a reason behind it. instead of thinking about it lets all say how cool a new v8 block will be
no 350 my post had said it was suggested by someone i reconsider the loser line. I did, and removed it so the thread would not tumble into a name calling match, and we all could get to the point. I have 2 small kids, not to mention my neighbor who has 2 more even smaller kids, Do you think that snake wont bite them because they were pulling its tail ?? Get real. It is a carrier of whatever and eats rats and mice so what!!! I dont want it living in my yard with my family. My neighbor who shot it dont want to have it around his kids either. I bet if I asked ALL my neighbors would rather see it dead. I dont live in the city I live in the county and I see enough wildlife to choke a horse!! The snake is dead so is your attitude.
A dog is domesticated, cats are domesticated, and I don't have monkeys running around in my backyard. I bet if I did, and they were as plentiful as snakes, we'd be killing them as well.
mike that snake has kept more bugs, moles, rats and other critters out of your yard. it was being a snake. i grew up with cows, chickens, pigs and a big darn brama bull. snakes too. CT is countryish the other day a skunk nearly ran over my foot as i was moving some stone. the snake could have been used to teach your kids lots. instead the next snake they see they will kill, cause dad did. great. i don't really remember the rat thing.
