Are you sure you didnt have oil contaminated gaskets? Fresh set on each install? I have a hard time believing that the intake did not fit right??

Guys, I think we just need to give Cason a break and let him cool down from a frustrating, long wrenching session. There are a lot of variables like deck height, any machine work that may have been done on heads or engine, head gasket thickness, intake gasket thickness etc. any combo of which could make installation not go perfectly.

Not to mention that I failed to tell him to avoid the stock rubber end seals on his first effort, knowing that the intake does not sit in the valley like the stock one. This alone could have tweaked the flanges from being torqued down out of correct position, screwing up further attempts.

Cason gave me some good feedback on possible changes to make like PCV baffling. He was also working against time constraints this being his daily driver.

dont sweat it cason. i was just kidding. if it were sent to me, it would sit in the garage for 6 months collecting dust. :error: take your time and give it another shot this summer. :TU:

Not a fresh set on each install but they were clean and they sealed as well as I believe they could have. With a good amount of silicon the 3rd install, had probably little to no vacuum leaks, but the terrible oil leaks made it undriveable, and I am still confused why. It's still frustrating because I was rolling out of the driveway to drive it, but the oil trail and antifreeze in the alternator caused me to have to park it again. :spank: But not to worry this intake WILL be tested. Any Alabama or Atlanta members with 350s want to have me over?:pp

Sorry to here about the bad luck. Maybe there will be another chance later on.

Props to you Cason for trying ... and trying ... and trying.

Being that this car is your daily driver I can more than understand your reasons for putting the original intake back on - FOR NOW

Overcoming obstacles are the steps up the ladder to success

Yeah, that makes me want to try it again this June, but first. Let's think of what the most effective gaskets, gasket sealer, and silicon end sealers to use. I used TA Comp. .062 Thickness gaskets. Also would someone like to lend a hand?:beer

The X-Factor is now installed and on the ROAD!!!:beers2:

    List of solutions:
    • Vacuum Leaks - Used .062 Thickness TA Composite Gaskets WITH the valley pan. No, I did not cut off the ports. I left them on. NO Vacuum leaks.:TU:
    • Oil Leaks - Used ALOT of Ultra Black RTV where the intake hits the block. Only seeps a tiny bit of oil in one corner, but I think I'm going to leave it. I suggested to Mark that people used a modified rubber end seal, with a light amount of RTV. The amount of sealer I had to use to get it to sandwich was a little scary. The rubber seal I believe needs the top portion cut off,so it will be thinner, then go over the top with a bead of silicon. I would have done this, but I had already past the point of no return if you catch my drift.
Wow, this thing runs great. I DO feel a moderate seat of the pants improvement, but I am going to get it on the dyno for scientific comparison. I am going to track test also, but that throws alot more variables into the mix.

I'm going to call it a day. Peace Out!:3gears:

As far as using a sealant in addition to the rubber seal. The stuff to use is called... "The Right Stuff".

Ah, I apologize. I thought you were just being a smart ass.:error: I didn't see it at NAPA when I bought my last round of sealants. Another product that I used and was very impressed with was High-Tack spray sealant. This stuff sprays on like paint and stays extremely sticky. No chance of vacuum leaks:TU:

Actually I was being truthful, with a side of smart a$$. I think NAPA is where I got mine. But I think I also let Rick Henderson have what was left after using it too - because I don't see any of it on the shelf.:Do No:

    gscalifornia Small blocks rule!!

This is exactly what I had to do to my '69 350 after having the heads worked on. They must have taken a little more off when surfacing them then they told me as it would squish the rubber end gasket out when torqued down. I took the end gaskets and carefully cut the top bead off and they sealed perfectly!

Props on getting it running and I look forward to the dyno results!:3gears:
