The 350 Buick engine is a Y block. The crank is sunk into the block. What your seeing is the front main cap. On either side is the rough casting edge of the block. Its normal
Jason, I think that he is asking about the locator dowel holes.... btw that plastic covered cam gear has got to go.....nothing but trouble....
For god sakes- clean out your garage man! How can you work like that!? Lol. Have fun with that new cam and 4bbl, it will really wake up the motor, headers will help it out alot too if you dont already have them.
Oh thank god! haha i was worried bout them cuz they look like cracked type holes. Thanks for the good news Doc, i do have a new double roller timing set im puttin in when i get it back together, didnt want to risk that plastic :TU: Haha i know i know. All that crap on the wall behind the buick is my parents stuff. I tell them they dont need all of it, but they insist we do. To be honest, it is pretty clean minus the buick parts on the ground, cuz normally my moms turbo Beetle is parked in there. I have chrome Poston headers im gunna have a shop put on once i get the cam swap done Anything look amiss to you guys (engine wise that is)?
those Scarebird disc conversion kits are actually rather affordable, IIRC. If you're going brakes (im not speaking from experience)... then thats where I would go with them...
Been on pause for a few days due to work and school. While im waiting should i have the timing cover soaking in a solution or...dishwasher..? lol
I'm afraid if you put your timing cover in your dishwasher, your mom would **** a brick!:bla: EDIT: I apologize for the language.
If you want to get it clean the easy way , submerge it completely in simple green and leave it for 24 hrs .... that stuff is expensive but works like gang busters,,,, dont dilute it at all,,,, its the best that I have found.....
Timing cover is in its green bath :TU: But what the hell is up w/ my timing chain? Im lining the crank w/ the cam (dot to dot) before taking it off and my manual shows the dots closest to each other, cam dot down, crank dot up. but this is what mine looks like...uzzled: Both dots are up....what do i do...? o No:
What mike said. turn the crank another rotation. oh and those plastic teeth on the gears. it's time for a new timing set.
Brian. after posting this I was catching up with the thread. oh being a 350 did you get the timing cover gasket set with the neoprene front main seal? it works good. just follow the directions in the package about filing down the high spots (3 or 4 places where they staked in the metal shield in the cover. also if your this far into it. if you have an old water pump you may want to swap it now too. especially if you haven't removed it yet and you accidentally break a bolt. I replaced my timing chain and front main seal and put it all back together took it for a ride. Came back and the weep hole started dripping and it was fine before. ou:
Plastic coating on cam gear teeth . Nate I should have worded different like you did so as not to confuse him , thanks .
Yea this thread started a while back. I had to go back myself and see what i started with. When this started i knew practically nothing about this. Now here i am w/ my engine in pieces everywhere :TU: But i wasnt plannin on doin the main seal....
keep it up brian, looks like a good effort you are putting in. Makes me want to build another motor. I am sure you will be happy with your performance gains!:3gears:
line your dots up and remove the old t/c and gears.... dont move the crank,,, and then install a new all steel t/c and gears.....oil them up after you get them installed....scrape all the old gaskets off, real good, double ck. the cam bolt tightness WITH A TORQUE WRENCH before you reinstall the cover.....
Do yourself a favor and replace the main seal! Always remember what you don't replace while you're there WILL haunt yo later :TU:
