This is conducted on the track not on the street

I have a friend with a 69 440 six pack Super Bee. and hear about how bad a$$ the 440 six pack is and how my non stage 1 455 has no chance against this "MOPAR". his car is a very good looking car it is purple and looks like it is in to good of shape to be on the dragstrip. it is as i said a 440 six pack car with fiberglass front end, car weighs 3500, 2800 stall 4.10 gears 11:1 comp big cam, bla bla bla:boring:

I have a 1972 GS350 skylark with a stock bottom end 1970 455 with a home port job small valve heads, b4b intake, a crappy 800 cfm edlbrock, full length headers, 3.23 gear, stock stall, heck the trans is a 1970 400 with a basic b&m shift kit never been rebuilt. and the car looks like it was drug out of a junk yard. I got to hear all winter what a POS my car was.

so the big day came, test and tune day at our 4000ft adjusted altitude 1/8 mile track. I was nervous, after all i was racing a mopar. The lights come down and I treed him with my .523(.023) light against his .876(.376) light. I ran a 8.57 to his 8.78. It was ugly.:spank::3gears:

The excuses have been flying all this winter, his trans is not shifting quite right from second to third. so he has bought a new tci street fighter trans. and is going from a 2800 stall to a 3500 stall. :ball:

as for me i am going to be sporting a new $50 roll on paint job. I already changed to 3.55 gears. Getting rid of stock trans and stock stall for a new 3000 stall switch pitch trans and a poston front spoiler ram air kit.:Brow:

low comp 455 vs high comp 440 to be continued. What do you think:Do No:

My opinion is that MPH tells the story about whose car is better (faster) than ET, because it mostly takes traction out of the picture.

Faster ET might mean a better driver, but MPH indicates a faster car (to me anyhow).

If you ever look at a 440's head ports/bowls you will see they are very small. They look like they belong on a small block. I know because I used to own a 70 GTX (fact. 440/4.10s) that was a freinds and we did both our engines (I used a 455/67 conv. heads,sp4000/3.73) at the same time with an equal build to both. I smoked him every time. :3gears:
I have three freinds into mopars and they know they know they are way over priced. They all agree my Buicks were made better.

Looks like it came down to driver error. With someone who knew how to trip the lights good. You'd be toast...

The best part of that whole deal is that your car was built and raced for less than 1/3 the cost of his car! Just think how bad you would have smoked him with nothing more than a set of 4.11 gears and some drag slicks in the 1/8 mile.
Next time race him for pink slips. Then you can sell the mopar to someone with more money than brains and use the cash to build your GS!

  8. the buick was 2 tenths faster. he would have had to cut a light 2 tenths better than the buick just to tie him

I'm not buying it...3.23 gears in the 1/8 would not get the rpm's up where they needed to be in that short of distance.. I had 3.42's in my 70 462 and it ran like a slug till it hit the powerband. Most 440 cars had better gearing from the beginning. The Mopar man left ahumungous pile of time at the tree. Lets say the driver was better and hit an 01 light...BYE BYE Buick.. We all like to think our Buicks are the fastest cars ever produced, but I have seen the best of them beaten as well.

If they both cut perfect lights the buick had the better ET. RT doesn't effect ET.

The other car could have been smoking the tires and lost out right there. We are talking 3.23 vs 4.10 gear ratio remember..NO WAY this happened!! I also had 4.10's in the same car and ran 11.98 in the 1/4 compared to high 12's with the other gears...I still say BS...

on the other hand i had a 4000 lb 66 lark that went 12.20's with a 3.36 gear and the guy i sold it to figured it would be way faster with 3.73 gears. he slowed down to 12.60's with the 3.73's it's all about the combination and it's entirely possible that the mopar guy just threw a bunch of cool partstogether not taking the time to make sure they complimented each other. deep gears and cubic inches don't automatically equal a fast car

Agreed Bob...I have a buddy that built a 70 SS Chevelle with the mentality bigger is best only to run in the 15's(near my stock 73 GS 350 times.) I am having a tough time swallowing this though..

This is not at all hard for me to believe. It is one pass down the dragstrip. Tuning and learning to drive the car account for quite a bit. I wouldnt guarantee I could beat a Yugo on my first pass in a first time down the track in a fresh car challenge.

This is a great thread!!!:TU: 'specially since I've never even been to a track. I'd probably be a nervous wreck for sure!!

Well, RT does have some effect. It was proven years ago that if both cars run the exact same ET, but one car has a .01 second quicker RT, the car that left first will win. The clock doesn't start until the front tires clear the lights. Reaction time is measured from the last green until the starting lights are tripped. If the Buick left .353 second quicker, and had a .21 lower ET, he actually beat the mopar by .563 second. Even if they had both left even, the Buick was still .21 seconds quicker at the end.
Was he lucky? Yeah, there is no doubt about that. If the mopar guy spends some time working on his combo, he should be able to run alot quicker. But hey, he is a mopar guy. How smart can he be? (That ought to set off all the bells and whistles!) LOL
    Later, Randy

We both run BF Drag radials. I run 26" he runs 28" No tire slippage. i run a 1.80 60ft he run's a 1.90 on a good day. at our track .5 is a perfect light, i ran a .523. and we ran all season long and the story never changed even when he out trees me. my ET only got faster as the season went on and when i switched to 3.55 my ET went to low 8.4 at our altitude. his ET stayed right about 8.7. i think he might of got into the 8.60's. and at sea level my ET was 8.05 which is to fast for only running a 12.80 1/4. I think that is because of my crappy carb. as far as tuning went, every weekend he would say "this time your going down". I'm not saying I have the fastest car in the world, or even in our class at the track. But i do think that it is cool that my street Buick is faster than his non street mopar. when i say street i mean I drive it every Thursday to the local cruisin, I now my car is to ugly for that but i don't care. Heck I have even drove it to the track and back which is about 50 miles each direction. He cant even drive it to the gas station. and this year when he switches from 2800 to 3500 his car will be even more of a race only car.

It is the small lunati cam 224I 234E 112LSA 5deg overlap. I shift at 5400 so I believe it is right about 3000 when it is pulling the hardest. But it comes out of the hole really well right now with stock stall.
