So i have a cousin with a ford 302 built by me:Dou: stock rods, hyperucrackit pistons, afr aluminum heads, cobra intake, 65mm TB. 30lbs injectors, his buddy has a stock 302 notchback both 5 speed with world class trannies, i know these are fast cars and light, but just wondering if anyone outhere has beat these things..if so would a 72 skylark with a stock 455 with b4b intake, headers, 830 cfm carb would atleast keep up, they are planning on going to the track on wednesday (so if anyone wants to go give them a beating go to sac raceway:Brow: ) anyways i wanted to know if it was atleast worth spending time on prepping it..i might not stand a chance with my cousins but how about the other one..oh forgot the other notchback has a cobra intake and headers aswell:eek2:. show of hands if anyone outthere have stommped on these Fonies Whoops Ponies

Back in the 90's I was cruising on the motorway in a 1968 Riviera with later model 455 engine, doing something around 80 MPH.
This 1983 Mustang showed up in my rear view mirror and passed me at a speed somewhere around 90 MPH and I decided to follow it.

I passed him at a speed over 100 MPH, but he came back and passed me again.
I couldn't get that Riviera over 120 MPH, so I lost to that little Mustang....:Dou:

I would take them on. If they know what they are doing and have the combinations right you could be toast. I doubt it if you just go by the percentages, most of these cars are not fast.

How to recognize the real thing when you are racing someone (what they have.)
    1. tires, drag radials could be fast could be stylin
    2. slicks, probably fast, they suck for regular driving so probably needed
    3. rolll bars, usually don't spend the money unless required to
    4. engine sound, not just a loud exhaust but good sharp crisp sounds
    5. whine, could be supercharged
    6. real quiet with slicks and a cage, could be turbocharged
    7. no brag driver

    BUICKRAT Got any treats?

Should be a piece of cake. Mustangs are easy prey and most of their owners are convinced there is nothing faster than a peanut 302. They are not all that fast.

cray1801 Too much is just right.

I raced three last visit to the track. First two were NA and ran 14.54@97 and 13.49@105.

Then I raced a nice cobra with aftermarket charger that ran 11.50@123.... beat him too, on a holeshot :beer .

Nineteen out of twenty Mustangs/Cobras at the strip are 12-15 second cars. There's so many you can always find a fast one, either someone that knows his chit or has spent the money paying someone else to help him go fast.

I think if you've got your car sorted out and a set of slicks they should be good runs either way. The one I'd watch for is the one with the AFR heads, if its got a good tune, it should be a 12 second car....either way have at it.

I've thrown a whooping on a few in the past few years. It's usually not too hard because the driver can't drive worth a damn. And, after all, it's a Ford.

since never really heard any buick guys beating ford guys in the past, im feeling more confident now...although not enough to say i would, just gotta get the right stuff, as i know i cant take it without posi...my cousins car with the afr heads uses slicks, but cant hook for Chit and last time i heard before the build, was he ran high 13s.. i know he tried to take a 02 camaro ss and lost by about half a car. anyways good to hear this little quest is possible..just makes me work harder on it and smarter.. its not all about adding tons of power to the motor without getting it down to the ground..thanks:beer

Actually, I've never been beat by any Mustang not just the Fox body cars. You're the one with a big stick, use it!

Tip: loose the 830, those big boosters will kill your top end (top fat). 950 is fine.

You found my FAVORITE car to beat down.
He'll either miss a shift, blow away the tires, get out of shape, break, or all of the above.
As long as there is no forced induction involved, you'll be all grins.

Let us know how you do. :TU:

track mustang I beat a few years ago - he dialed a 12.4 and ran his number. I dialed a 13.5 (because of no roll bar) and ran a 12.18. I left on his lite not mine

  16. Phil

Phil It really *is* a 350...

I've killed quite a few of these old 5.0's back when they were new and the parts market for them was kinda slim. We even told one guy to take it back to the dealership because it was broke.

My 72 has a 350 bored .030 with 10.25:1 hypereutectic pistons, comp cams shafts and rockers, .480/.495 cam (GS113 or GS114... can't remember), TA Stage1 350 intake, 800cfm Quadrajet on a 1" spacer. MSD 6AL with a '75 Buick HEI with MSD internals, 2800 stall 10" converter, TH350 with a B&M transpak, and 3.70 gears. Hooker Supercompetition Headers and SuperTrapp 5A mufflers for the exhaust. I ran it with Mickey Thompson SS H50-14's on the rear on the old Buick ralleys.

After killing a couple of those old 5.0's, one guy with a v8 Vega wouldn't let me go until he saw under the hood. :)

Stage2man i just dropped close to 600 for this thing, 578 to be exact..not to mention tuning it...ive heard good things so far, and as far as performance without tuning, it has worked super at high rpms..it is at lower rpms where im getting hesitation but with a good tuning i should be good..just trying to fix my braking problem, so we'll see on wednesday if they go or not, i kind of dropped the (i wanted to go to the track line 2) at my cousin and he mentioned he was not going to race his car.:Smarty: lessoned learned, noone wants to go up against a big block specially after seeing a huge burnout with a pegleg the other day...hhaha...anyways thanks and ill keep you guys posted on the other 5.0..

  19. otter

    otter It'll be done someday.

There are so many variables, I don't hesitate to race anyone in anything. When I was young I street raced a pretty stock 69 Electra, it just had the little 430 in it. Only mods were dual exhaust, an unknown cam(purchased used for $50) and a flipped air cleaner lid. That car beat corvettes, camaros, mustangs, challengers, road runners, grand nationals, etc...I lost races sometimes, but you never know. The races I had the most fun with was the 69 440 stick Road runner I beat by a fender, the 71 Challenger 340 stick-beat by a car length or 2, yes there were a few T-types and Grand Nationals I beat, this was back in the late 80's, early 90's so about the only mods available at first was a new chip (for the 3.8 turbos). Nowadays those T-types can easily run 11's or 10's on the street. I am in the process of building a 68 Skylark with a 455 (midlife crisis/reliving my youth?) should be fun with 2,000 fewer pounds to push around.(Electra was 5700lbs, Skylark 3700 lbs)
I say GO FOR IT, if you loose, sort out what went wrong and try again. Keep wrenchin till you give him the spankin.
