Yea, i know all the parts available for them, i just built a 5.0 engine for my causin, afr heads, crane rocker arms, i think it was the F cam.. .30 speed pro coated hyperucrackit pisotns, moly rings, arp bolts everywhere, the car was fast before, now its faster.. although has too much torque he cant hook tires at all, thats the one i wanted to race, his buddy has a same model yet notchback and his is stock, he claimed he did 13s but ended up doing 14.5 best was 13.7 with slicks, downside is poor thing ended up taking a crap in front of me, and this is the guy that had challenged me for days now, he was excited when i was about to get there, he was asking if i was taking my car.. anyways i think im still yet even in the 14s...just a little more work and i would be able to hit high 13s maybe, but hey what do you expect from a full weight Skylark vs. a gutted little 2500 lb car that has a big motor and a 5 speed.. honestly thought they would be faster.. yet like you said. for every one fast car, there is another fast one othere. guess we'll see in time..C ya'

My 3800 camaro can easily beat a stock 302.

I was at Maryland International raceway with my $300 69 Riv GS w/430 that looked like swiss cheese and took a 90s model Mustang 5.0. I can't believe the GS made it past pit inspection to begin with, and everyone at the track was giving me dirty looks for bringing the car up there...until I ran it. The first pass I ran about a 15.2 and found the power steering pump leaking afterwards, so I cut the belt and while I was under the hood also found that my broken hideaway headlights could be taped back into the off position providing more clean cool airflow to the engine. That poor Mustang with his cowl induction scoop and cute little slicks never knew what hit him. I left him with a .508 light, pulled on him at the 30, the 60 even further, the 1/8 I could see him in the rear and the 1/4 I could see the ladies in the time shack laughing bad at him or me, but I didn't know which. The tank ran a very respectable 14.7 seconds about as stock as it could be. Everyone in the pit area that was giving me dirty looks was looking over my shoulder this time as I opened the hood to see what the car had and commenting, "damn that things got a big engine" and " I wonder what he's running". I slept good that night to say the least, it was the first big block Buick I ever owned and the same reason why I bought the one that got me back in here just recently. I miss the old blue war wagon. I wish I still had it today in better shape, but it was probably pretty light with all the rust it had.

I used to beat them in my '66 4-speed. As far as I know they were all stockers. My dad bought a 1990 GT, and I found the first gear to be really tall, but the rest of them were way too low to keep up the pace of my '66 nailhead's torque. Dan

The best way to beat a Mustang is off the line. Even if the Fox has some good cash in it, it won't hook up as well as a Skylark. From there, it's really hard for them to catch up to you, let alone pass. I've used that method time after time to my advantage.

Having said that, there was one guy in a stock-appearing GT (1992) that totally buried me from a light one evening in Vegas. At the following light, I asked him what modifications he had done. He just smiled and said, "racing gears." OK, whatever.

And, it just so happens, that last night I took out two Mustangs in my '72 Skylark (stock 350 4B and 2.56 non-posi). The first kid was in a 2002ish six-banger 5 speed. I out torqued him off the line, then let him pass because we were in a 30MPH zone in town. The second guy was in a 1985 convertible 5.0 with 5 speed. After pulling up behind him, he tried to lose me in a round-about intersection (which he should have, but didn't). We both accelerated out of the intersection and I passed him with ease. He wanted to race again, but I had noticed a car seat in the back of his car as I passed him, so declined (couldn't determine if there was a kid in there or not). He sped off after I kept steady at 35MPH. Not exactly hot Mustangs, but no match for a low compression Buick 350.

My '70 Lark with a '73 engine used to beat the mid-80s mustangs. Most of them weren't really that fast, and most of the owners didn't know how to drive (missed a shift in an auto b/c they thought they'd go faster by hand).

Later the Mustangs became respectable again... though I'd still give them a hard time at highway speeds.

With a 455 setup right, you should have no problems.

Just an update, went to. Return to kingdon raceway october 4th, and raced 4 cars, one was a 77ish truck short bed, sounded awsome.. ran 15.7, beat it bad. then we felt like an air restriction problem. took off the gs air cleaner and put on a regular cleaner, picked up 1 second.. the next car was a 66 mustang, ran pretty good, and was intimidating us at the line. WE though we'd be screwed, but we smoked it off the line, and about mid ways our throttle got stuck and the tranny was slipping, so we had to put the car in neutral but we were close to each other till about 3/4 down the track, that was our only lost with a time of 14.7, then was a 69 le mans. did not stand a chance, our time was 14.5.. Now the last one i ran myself and did 14.7 with the tranny still slipping, i guess the heat was soaking the tranny and was slipping after 2nd gear. and we were launching the car in 2nd because the linkage is all bent and wont go into 1st. so i found out it was in between gears all the time.(if anyone has a linkage let me know, for a th400) Had a blast outhere, and noticed that their times were not all accurate since they were running portable equipment since its not a full blown drag strip. i was told it was off by 1 second. working on the flaws now so i was told after that i should hit low 13s or even high 12's..already scared the crap out of my cuasin and he dares not touch the subject again, his car might run 10s for what i care, the question is, (is he hooking the way he should) :ball:
