If you got beat by a car with a wing on it would you be embarassed?

I wouldn't be mad or embarassed. If they can build a 4 banger to keep up with either of my '59s, then props to them. Old cars are still cooler. And cruising around college we'll see who gets more girls...

Uh, my supra had a wing....a factory wing....or spoiler....and it dynoed at 703whp/640fttq.........mid 9s street car. It weighed about 3300lbs. Whats embarasssing about getting beat by something that has 300 more hp than you? :Do No: Shouldnt be anything embarassing about it. Those things were built from the factory to handle 1000hp on a stock bottom end. There are many examples of supras out there with 1k horsepower. Now for the nissans, I had a 240sx that I built myself and spent about 40k on it. It had 380rwhp and was a low 11s car. I used to be into the imports, now I just love all cars that have an awesome history....whether it be japanese or american.....or german.

Sounds pretty wicked! 240s, Supras, Audi TTs and srt-4s are the only tuners I would ever drive.

I don't think there is any shame in it. Like it's been previously mentioned here, guys with fast imports are car guys who know their stuff. Not punks with fart cans and homemade front clips (my old neighbor used that spray can foam stuff and carved out a front end for his ricer. what a douche) It's not hard to believe that 30-40 years after the last muscle car that engineers found a way to do more with less. If somebody can take a ricer and beat me with the same $6000 I have invested in my BBB Regal, my hats off to them. As for the GTO, Corvette, Viper guys out there...I'm not real impressed. Give me 40-60 grand to invest in my Buick and I'll do a hell of a lot better than 12's. Yes I know they are more flashy, but that wasn't the question. As much as I hate ricers, I trully believe that instead of bashing what Japan has accomplished the last 20 years, we should be putting a boot in GM's @$$es for not giving us something to fire back with. Want a new Buick? Would that be the new minivan, SUV, or the 4-door sedan? God bless the old Buicks, the GN, GNX, GS, GSX, and everything else that embarrased GM's favorite son, Chevy!

Wings can be a good thing. We have a ton of winged rice burners in town here, but they usually are very receptive of the serious old muscle. I did have a pretty tight run with a Subaru X. They are deceptively quick.

I think you're misunderstanding the "GTO, corvette and viper guys" I'm sure with 40-60 grand anyone could build something better than 12s. but it wont be as smooth, it wont be brand new and it wont have a warranty. Not everyone is just into having a fast car. That's why they dont make muscle cars anymore. I'm sure someone buying a new corvette or Viper or fast GTO is not saying to themselves "Now I can beat anything on the road" even though they can beay 90% of vehicles on the road and they didn't have to make a single modification. Not everyone wants an old, loud, barely starts in the cold, 10 mpg, big block buick. That's what I want but that's not what everyone wants. More power to the people who can afford 40-60 grand fast, stock vehicles. Because I sure as hell cant.

I wonder if I could build a sleeper by taking a well built 240SX tuner and adding all the lights and bling. :idea2: Everyone would see the junk and never suspect there was something truly fast under it.

There are a couple of lowered civics with ground effects, massive wings, fart cans and thumpin' stereo's. With all the extra weight they couldn't outrun a stock civic.

There's one that has to have a couple hundred pounds of amps, tv screens, particle board and subwoofers.

If I got beat buy a ricer with a 5 foot tall useless wing.. oh yes...

But being beat buy a tuner with a spoiler no.. some of those cars are truley impressive.

There is no shame in getting beat by some of the new import "muscle". I spanked a STi on the straights but once we hit the curves, i was done. He gave me a thumbs up and even pulled over to chat cars for a bit. He was SHOCKED he got his arse handed to him by a Buick. Got friends with worked over STi's and Im soooo tempted to get rid of the minivan for one... Those things are evil. 300 to 400 hp all wheel drive... NICE...

The real question for me is Rice vs Tuner. Some imports are fast as all hell. Usually there not he ones with rediculus wings, but some are rwd and some people who know there way around an engine have crappy styling. If you have a spoiler or little wing, don't take offense, I mean the fwd car that can pull wheelies with all that rear downforce.

One problem is that a lot of people think newer=better, whether it is or not. It's sort of a yuppie/status thing.

These newer cars aren't fast because they are newer, and don't get good mpg because they are newer.

For example, look at the first automatics with overdrives compared to new ones - not a great difference. Certainly not what one would expect after two decades. Also look at weight differences, and longevity.

BTW, my '70 'Lark started easier in the cold than my mid-90s beaters, and it was as loud as the winged-ricers that cruise around with the blinky lights.

Still, there is merit to getting better mileage, having a warranty, and being so new that break-downs are less likely.
For less money than a new car, any one of us can have our old Buicks "restified" to be equal in nearly all ways. Whether we want the "old" equivalent of a fart-can is another story.

I was just defending the innocent. I'd much rather drive my '59 401 nailhead and get 10 mpg than have a warranty and get 30 mpg in a 'yota.

I have to be completely neutral in this, as my username implies I have an STi, its a blue 2006 and as you all know they come with the massive wing. I haven't touched the exterior or interior, but its got an intake, bellmouth downpipe, titanium catback, piggybacked ecu, new boost solenoid and a new intercooler (which I haven't installed yet). It would smoke my skylark on the straights and the twisties, and even when I get done with the buick it still probably won't be as fast.

More on topic, the day I drove my buick home my girlfriend followed me in my STi, and coming out of the tollbooth we both nailed it. I couldn't even see my STi it was so far ahead after she hit 4th gear... It was bittersweet. :)

You should put the Toyota in the trunk in case you break down.

I have a few coworkers who I'm trying to convince to drive a tank-full without overdrive. That should be interesting.

just so you know, a top of the line sportbike, cbr1000, gsx1000 etc...all easily run 0-60 in 3 seconds or lower on average and 9-10 second quarter miles, bone stock from the factory...I dunno how fast an STi is, but I kinda doubt they're that close to a 1000cc sportbike....I think the fastest 0-60 number I've seen from one was 2.70 seconds...sorry I know this is a car forum, but I just thought I'd put that up there...if a stock STi can hang with that then I would be VERY impressed!

No. As a matter of fact my brother owns one that would spank me, and one of my techs at work owns one that would murder my car in every performance catagory. They are both street driven cars that get more than 20 mpg highway and run high 11's... they are EVO's (2003 and 2004 models) and are owned by serious car guys.

BUT, they respect my GS because it is noisy and has an old school rumble they cannot duplicate at any cost. I would love to have an STI personnally, but the budget says NO.
