When I put my manifold on the 430 last fall, I found the end seals were too short. :eek2: Don't know whether they shrunk from age or the Victor/Felpro seals were just made wrong. I used the black RTV to seal the ends and overlapped the sealer on the exterior of the block/manifold. Used Hi-tack on the intake ports for both sides of the metal gasket and more RTV around both sides of the water ports. Guess I will find out when I fire it up this spring. o No: This is not a race motor, so I should be ok. Just my 2 cents worth, Mark
:jd: I gotta buy a new keyboard... I drooled on it and it died. The more time I spend here, the more I want a 455. That is absolutely beautiful.
Let me get this straight (as I'm building a 455, myself, also). To install an intake, use the Factory End seals, an AM&P valley pan gasket (that's what I'd LIKE to use, too, and most likely WILL), and RTV around intake ports on Heads? Does that sound right?o No: I only ask, because I've always done it the way I was "taught". (Use RTV in place of end seals, and around water ports). What kind of intake gaskets do you use with the AM&P valley pan, between the intake and the Heads? (Or, just the RTV?)
Say Jim, at first I thought that picture of the motor was mine until I saw the aluminum heads. Unless you are throwing in the heads on my deal! If you do I will sing your praises until the cows come home! I will even wash your truck for you! But enough dreaming, back to sleep. Brian
Recap Alright, After all the anticipated better performance from the New SP-1 intake over my old tried and true B4B I got a chance to take her out this past weekend and do some research! I am not a happy puppie, I knew it didn't feel as snappy on the low end, but I was willing to make it up on the Top side, well it just didn't happen. I raced my brother, with his G.S. I still beat him,BUT, once out of the hole He hung with me much better than He ever has. My car is over a second faster than his in the quarter with the B4B,but the other night after I jumped out on him from the start he hung right in there with me where as I usually keep pullin away.At this point I'm at a loss as what the problem is. I cant run the SP-1 with anything more than a 1/4 spacer [gasket] because of hood clearance. I am not willing to go through the process of running a scoop,so I quess I will never know if that is the problem. And in case your wondering he is running a stock intake and q-jet. Anybody have any thoughts as to what I might try before I go back to my old intake??????o No:
o.k ill let you know the truth, your brother installed a 250 hp nitrous shot over the winter and never told youp . seriously, i'm no genious but my bet is your carb needs to be adjusted to work with the single plane intake, or maybe its just too small. losing that power up top tells me that you may be starving for fuel
That is a possibility, Danny. Looks like I will be throwin on My 'other' Thermo-quad this weekend, and see what happens. I hope your right. This has really got me frustrated
Does anybody else have any suggestions as to what I might try next to make my new SP-1 perform better? I'm running out of ideas and don't want to put the B4B back on till I try everything.Thanx in advance,I'm desperate. I've checked the plugs, they are very clean and good color[light tan], I checked the timing and it is right on at 36*.HELP
Kenny did u ever figure out what the problem was?did you keep the SP-1 on or went back to the B4B? Thanks
Re: Recap I dunno George......but he's gotta eat those werdz .....Mr. FiberGlass Stage2 Hood+Scoop:moonu: Kenny !! Seeya on the Blvd.....just teeezing ya
Alan, Yeah,I know!! I did eat those words. But the new hood is definetly "cool". I'm still playing with different spacers and filters. For now,I have enough room to run a 6" tall K&N filter element!! I have 2 more weeks till E-Town to get the hood "sealed". Hopefully I'll get it done by this weekend. Are you cruisin tonite? I think I''ll be out around 11.:TU:
Well i`ve decided to install the B4B for the time being till i get the SP-1 gasket matched and plus i will feel the difference since i`ve never run a B4B before, atleast i can put back the Star Wars air cleaner back for a while
uh oh,i messed up on the intake installation does anyone in the NY area have a spare set of TA Intake gaskets on hand that they would like to sell?i tried with the AMP windage tray but theres just too big of a gap between the manifold and tray,it got messy and i got pissed and started chucking sh@t around so now i`m debating whether to use the AMP tray.
George, Sorry to here about your problem.I've got a set from TA,.060 thick,I bought them in May,never used, brand new.I ended up using the .030 thickness ones instead. I'm on Long Island,W.Babylon. If your in a hurry, drive out and pick them up! Same price I paid $17.50.:Smarty:
Kenny i dont know what size the ones i was using were?let me measure the thickness and i`ll get back to you. Thanks:TU:
