The first CERTIFIED 11 second pure stock car!

    Well, an invisible line? Not quite, as the FAST guys are running anywhere from 50 t0 80 cubes more, roller cams, and porting to the max. I do have to say it is getting harder to defend this stuff! Remember that their is still no truly certified car that has run in the 11's by PSMCDR rules. Yes you must run the time the weekend of the event at the event.It's kind of like records in NHRA. You can run the times all day long at the test and tune but it needs to be done on the FRIDAY or SATURDAY event. That did not happen again this year just in case you didn't attend.

    Jimmy and Wayne in November's Car Craft

    I just got my November issue of Car Craft. Good shot of Jimmy rolling out of the burnout box. Nice write up talking about both Jimmy and Wayne's cars. It said Wayne went 10.978 @126.88 with his 511 CID F.A.S.T entry vs. Jimmy's 11.62 @120.69 in his Pure Stock 427 CID. Congratulations to both of you! :beer

    Two major advantages mentioned before are glued tracks, and improved tires. The third that makes a difference is exhuast. The new exhuast systems do more than anything you can to the motor.

    My '70 Challenger T/A that was certified last year, is correct in all aspects from original except bore. It had to be bored out due to 35 years of use. It still came in under the factory advertised compression. Original cam profile, and you are allowed ABSOLUTELY NO porting, gasket matching, grinding of cast flash etc. Correct heavy stock replacement pistons that are mandated by the cert rules etc. My car has 10.13 to 1 compression and went 13.504 @ 103.65. It is the fastest small block Mopar so far at the events. It ran on pionts by the way. As I have found no electronic iginition that has improved my times even .001 of a second. They just have a convience factor pionts dont.

    My Judge with its original motor was a +.030 over bore only. Original head cc's, original cam right on down the line. It was still a mid 10 to 1 compression motor. It went consistent 12.80's. These cars will go fast just as they were from the factory with just some time well spent tuning the tar out of them. The one item that did change everything was the exhuast, it picked up a tremendous amount once the Gardner show type exhuast came off.

    Pete's ZL 1 if I remember him telling me correctly is a complete bolt together of all NOS pieces with absolutely no NHRA blueprinting. It has something like 10.6 to 1 compression. Not even near the factory rating. Pete runs consistant low 12's.

    A drag test form 1969 on a Certified 440+6 with pwb, ps, radio, heater, exterior decor, lighting pkg, 4spd, weight of 3765 lbs, with test Remarks of, "absolutely pure stock condition-air cleaner and mufflers operating, street tires only: no special tuning; Witnessed by Jim Mcgraw and Roland Mcgonegal, of Super Stock Magazine. Raced at Cecil County dragway".

    Ronnie Sox: Worst run: 13.24 @ 110.29 Best run: 13.00 @ 111.52

    Roland McGonegal: Worst run: 13.95 @ 107.27 Best run: 13.32 @ 110.42

    Chrysler was so proud of this feat they made an ad out of it.

    If you look at Ronnie Sox's MPH it is about identical to Jim's currently. Hence the glued track/tires making the majority of the gains from 1969.

    Again it goes back to a comment I made long ago in another post. The fastest guys like Jim S., Bob K., Pete S., Jimmy and the rest of the 10 or 15 fastest guys, are the best tuners and drivers. No need to cheat or push NHRA limits when you go fast already. Plus the parts are simply getting to scarce and expensive not to leave good room for future rebuilds. We are racing them after all.
