Alright, new oil sender in! James said I cheated by taking the alternator bracket off Thankfully I didn't charge the AC yet!
And shes all back together. Hopefully, the weather gets a little better for a little road test Saturday
Teflon tape should not be used on a sender that achieves its ground thru the threads . It tends to " Insulate " the sender from ground . Just a tip .
I used pipe thread sealant. Permatex 80631. I actually used it sparingly. I used my finger to wipe most of it off so it was just in the recess of the threads too. Doesn't look like it though!
Factory gauges are now working! Onto tweaking the choke... For reasons unknown this engine does not like the factory choke settings. Specifically the vacuum break. It started after I jetted the carb, the engine would blow blue smoke on cold start. I honestly thought the valve seals were bad, but it was just getting choked out too much. Not sure what one has to do with the other but I digress.. After reading and reading the service manual, I basically just threw away the info in the manual and figured out what this engine wanted. Because 508 just has to be different.. So after bending and tweaking rods and tangs, I figured out this engine wants almost a 1/4" of vacuum break. No more smoke on startup, starts right up and goes right on fast idle. This tang that goes up against the secondary air flap needed to be bent to allow more air. And you can see the measurment. Both pics were taken while the engine was running. May not be by the book, but I gave it what it seems to like. I think I officially adjusted and messed with every adjustment there is on this car
Had the GSX out a few times already this spring. Choke is working really good. It's working like it's 1970 all over again. Still tweaking the cruise air fuel ratio. Had it running last year around 13.6. I decided to richen it up just a tad and see if it liked it more. A small adjustment of the APT screw netted me what I was looking for. Very small adjustments net big changes so I know I really have this carb dialed in pretty good. The idle AFR also richened up by richening up the cruise curcuit. Idle AFR is almost the same. Plugs look good. So at a 12.9-13.1 AFR from a 13.6ish, the engine runs noticeably better. I think this is its happy place. I can't understand how an engine can run well at 14.7 with zero color on the plugs. Mine certainly didn't
Stoich is 14.7,, juss sayin. The plugs tell you how the motor is running,, give it what it wants. The a/f meter is just a reference tool. Sounds like it's running really good. Ur5s in there too?
Despite popular opinion, UR5s are not a universal plug for every 455 application. I run the stock R44TS plugs in my car
Buick started to paint some engines Red in 1966. https://www.teambuick.com/reference/engine_colors.php
