First coat went on completely. The paint did flatten as described, even on the sides. The problem is we can see every little scratch from sanding through the paint, they really pop out at you now that there is color on it. Hopefully the additional coats and wet sanding will rememdy this. If not, it's gonna be a shiny turd. Hey Rick - Will the scratches fill with pain and fade more with each coat??
So, you painted the door in that picture? The reason I ask is that I was going to do this to my car with the same dark green, and I've read elsewhere on the net that it turns out teal for some reason, which is what your door looks like too. And I HATE teal. ________ CAT WHEEL
Here are the pictures I found on another board- this is dark hunter green rustoleum! ________ Honda Shadow 600 history
I just finished the second coat. The paint does get darker when dry, I wouldn't exactly call it Teal, bit it's not the same color as OE. I would think that you could add some black to darken it even more, but you would have to mix it all at once and then save it in the can so it was the same color for each coat. I will tkawe pictures after this second coat dries and post them up. THis second coat does seem to be filling the sanding marks better.
Thanks for the pics, I appreciate the info. I bought the paint to do this already, but I'm thinking about taking it back and going with a different color. I was also considering adding some yellow and black into it to make it less blue and darker, but that is getting a little complicated. ________ Free****tube
From what I've read, it seems to be around 50% mineral spirits. It depends on the temperature. Consistency should be nearly as runny as water. ________ RARE DISORDERS FORUMS
i have read the same as jadebird and also 60/40 paint/mineral spirits and the "consistency of whole milk". Just from my testing, the whole milk worked best. Thick enough to fill in minor scrathces and doesn't run as much on the sides. Yesterday I painted the whole, takes about an hour. After finishing, I went around the entire car with the roller again, no paint added and just ran it over with the roller weight. This coat came out smoother than the tests and the first coat. The paint was a little tacky and it helps distrbute it. jadebird - The dark hunter green definitely has some blue in it, not teal, but pushing the blue end more than the green. We are gonna put black stripes on the hood and trunk, combined with the black vinyl top I'm hoping it makes the whole thing look darker.
Well heres another $50 paint job for ya, its not a buick but its just as good i'd say :TU: Thats what she looked like after 3/4 gallon of tremclad flat black ($25), sprayed in my garage with a $29 hvlp gun. No sanding or buffing or anything...And im a very crappy painter. I didnt even thin the paint.
I can't wait to see some pictures of your car painted. I'm thinking of using the same color that you're using. I'll probably wait till the summer to do it though.
Keep us posted Skylark350! Sounds like it's going well for you. Did you happen to read the extended thread over on the mopar board? There is a car on there painted black with rustoleum (EDIT: it's actually not rustoleum, but another acrylic enamel available in Australia for around the same price. He rolled it on though), and the guy buffed it with a good power buffer and some professional rubbing compound, and it looked like glass! I think what I'm going to do is use two quarts of anodized bronze mixed with one quart of leather brown and one quart of black. I'm looking for a dark gray/brown color. By the way, I didn't mean any disrespect toward your color choice. I just don't like any of the blue/greens, and was a little disappointed that I hadn't researched it better before buying the paint. I was looking for more of a dark jade or forest kind of green. I like the striping idea. Should be very cool for a little money. I decided also to go ahead and use the Rustoleum clean metal primer. From what I've read, some people have had problems with some colors not completely covering the body work, even after 10 coats or more. ________ Volcano digit vaporizer
Here is what this stuff has the potential to be with a little more work with a good buffer and compound: EDIT: this is actually not rustoleum. It is Interlux Brightside boat paint that was rolled on. It's a single stage polyeurethane that is tougher and produces a wetter look than the rustoleum. Pretty impressive, if you ask me! ________ UHWH
I'm all about cheap paint jobs, on junkier cars that is. I have been looking at cheap paint solutions for my electra. Does anyone have any pictures of rattle canned paint jobs that actually look decent? Or mildly decent? The above picture looks really good. I don't really care about the paint being glossy, but I would like a dark color.
Jadebird - Didn't think I was dissed, no worries. I was hoping to give you info about what I perceive the color to be so you could make sure you get what you want. No sweat. Two coats on and I can still see the bondo spots, they are starting to get covered, but clearly not as much as the rests. That black car buffed up nice! I don't have a professional buffer so I'll have to see how my cheapie does with polishing compound. It shines up the Impala pretty good but it has nice paint. Wet sanding the first two coats starts tonite, I will get pics before to show the scratches.
UPDATE: I've done a little more research and found out that the black above was actually painted with Interlux Brightside boat paint. It's a single stage polyeurethane that can be rolled on (the black above was rolled on) and will produce a really wet looking durable finish. I think I'm going to take back my Rustoleum and go with that instead. ________ Prilosec Sickness
I think the interlux is what rick wrench posted about. As usual, I'm a day late. I had to do some mandatory overtime at work so our progress has slowed. I hope to have the painting done this weekend. I update as we go. Bill
Does this need any thinning like the Rustoleum or is it ready to use out of the can? I really like how that black shines!
I think the black car above was rolled on 100% out of the can, but you might get better results by thinning it some- might lay down better. I guess you would need to read what the manufacturer recommends for that. This stuff is advertised as being intended for brushing or rolling on. I was pretty amazed at the results with some wet sanding and buffing. ________ Half-Baked
