We had a big wind storm and the clouds had blown away by morning. I opened the garage to let some light in and found......runs on the trunk. I had time to wet sand them out this morning, I'll have to paint the trunk tomorrow morning. A bit of a delay, but the lesson is USE BETTER LIGHTING TO PAINT! :Dou:

SHould still be able to get the stripes on and whole car pics this weekend. I'm hoping to get the new vinyl on by monday, but if not you'll get pics without it.

    Good job!

Funny thing.....as some others have done.....back in '83-'84 I painted my '54 Ford and '68 Toronado with Rust-oleum. In a cheap Sears gun with a very small no tank compressor.

Had very little money, but they came out pretty good.

After seeing this thread, maybe my '51 truck will get a similar job! :TU:

I think the cheap Sears gun is still at Mom's

There might be a better option on guns if you have a decent compressor now. There is an HVLP gun at harbor freight really cheap that a lot of guys have had good results with. I'll try and find the part number and post it.

I know using a dryer is recommended, but do you think it would really be necessary with a cheap paint job?

Sorry fellas, I forgot to take the pics. I did get the black stripes and silever metallic pin striping done. Did not even get close to the vinyl top. I will take pics tonight and get them up.

I think the biggest benefit about this paint job is the ability to do it in the garage without overspray, vapors hitting the pilot light and so forth. I am sure spraying would be better, but you still get the mess, right???

Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
I agree about the overspray, etc. The method is what is really nice about the Rustoleum. By the way, is the paint hardening for you?

Do you mean an air drier as in big $$$ or a coalescing filter? I would definitely use a filter to get water and oil out of the line, or else you will likely have fisheyes. I've heard of some people even making one out of a roll of toilet paper. I think they make canisters for it.

It is defintely hardening and has already passed the fingernail test. I couldn't get the car outside for full body pics. Here are some of the stripes.

I'm still not sold on the silver pinstripe. The center is a 10 inch stripe, but I am wondering if it should have been wider. The stripes also go down the trunk, but I am thinking about maybe running a small black and even smaller silver pinstripe down the side. Opinions please!

The stripes on the trunk are a little off, I didn't take into account the contour at the bottom. So instead of running the tape straight down, I followed the body line. As a result, the stripes kind of curve in at the bottom. Just FYI for any noivces like me who might try this. They looked straight in tape, it was after paint that I noticed. They don't look bad, just a little off.

I am hopeful I can get the vinyl on this weekend but X-mas may put a damer on that. This car is truly transformed, i can't wait to get it all back together so I can post before/after of engine bay, paint and interior. It is really cool whe you consider the total to date is $1855.00 for everything including the car!

Really nice to see someone do such a great car "on the cheap"! I know what you mean about it being such a great experience with your son. When my son was 14 he bought a '71 GMC. By the time he got his licence at 16 it was on the road. We did all the mechanical, body and interior work ourselves. He really felt that he had accomplished something, much better than just buying a car! Can't wait to see the finished car.
