My '71 GS 455 has been seating ever since i moved down from NY to south FL. in '04. I did take it out a few times in '05 but after that life got in the way. This year the wife and I decided it was time to get the GS back on the road again. Maybe to relive our youth again as this is the car I drove around when dating her Back in the mid '80's.
So moved the car form it resting spot in the garage

To the center of the garage to have more room to work on.

Gas that seat in a tank for more that ten years is not pretty and nor does not smell well either.
So the tank was remove and replaced with a new one as well as fuel pump and fuel hoses.

    New one ready

Took some time but got it in and lines plumed.

Ten gal of gas, changed oil & filter, primed the oil pump and fuel pump. The GS was running again for the first time in over Ten years.
I do have a tapping sound coming from the top of the engine near the #1 & 3 cyc Maybe a collapsed lifter? It only started after the engine was warmed up.
Anyway, i'll post more as i go along.

Yeah it could be just a lazy lifter.

It might be a push rod or rocker arm. I’d remove the valve cover and have a look first before I looked at lifters. Try some Marvel Mystery Oil or another product that frees up sticky lifters.

Replacing that tank laying on the ground is a suck azz job. Good going on getting her back up and running!

Briz, It wasn't to bad. Car is up high enough and a floor jack it was in.

Thanks Larry. I'll pull the cover and see what going on. I'll try the snake oil as well if i don't see anything under the valve cover.
If it turn out to be a lazy lifter, where to buy them? TA performance?
    Thanks

Not sure I would go out and get new lifters. I'd put some Marvel in the oil and drive it. If its still there in a 100 miles of regular use, I would consider it then

We're all a little grumpy when we're woken up from a deep sleep!

When an engine sits for that length of time, it needs a little break in period.

I had a 70 big car given to me because it had a tapping noise just like that.
I bought 6 cans of STP oil treatment, (the really thick stuff) and kept adding it to the oil. After about 2 weeks the noise just stopped! It was probably a stuck or lazy lifter as stated above. Have no fear, if it wasn't tapping when you parked it, my guess is that it will be fine.

All good stuff guys. Much appreciated. Still have much to do before "Besty" see the streets. Next will be the brake system.

Overall the engine sounds really good, quiet.
If it were something serious, you'd hear other noises also, but its just that sleepy lifter:cool:

Dont be surprised if a rocker arm button sheared off. The are nylon and get brittle before their time! Its gonna cause a push rod/ lifter type noise. Congrats! ws

New parts are starting to roll in. Since the car was seating for so long, decided to replace the shocks. Although the Monroe sensa trac didn't look to bad.

Most of the other parts should be here during the week. Really excited, can't wait till she on new shoes. Thinking on going with Cooper this time around.
