Thanks Bill! A show car it isnt, but its' enough just putting this together in Mock Up mode and have it pound the pavement before any resto work is justified will be my satisfaction. Tomorrow is gonna end up putting the unit into the frame and tighten up the mounts, then all the little stuff before any sheet metal goes on. Its soo much easier to sit in a chair and work! Howz about that nailhead green on the starter bracket? ws
I’m hoping to be sitting right where you are a year from now. I plan on pulling the front clip like you did when I put my 430/200-4R in my 65. Just looks like it makes things a lot easier.
Got right where I need to be today. Rolled the assembly over 2 times by hand and not the slightest evidence of a rub. Its Pats birthday so I let her help, and so she did! We are both DOA and gonna watch Walking Dead.. Nighty-Night!! ws
Thanks guys, and Happy Birthday Derek! After picking up the mess from yesterday (!!) today is gonna be (GULP!) trying to fit exhaust manifolds. ITS TIGHT down in there !! The drivers side is gonna be the worst. I sure hope I dont hafta cut one of those guys up and re-weld it for clearance. Headers are out of the question! Probably hafta separate the rag joint and move the steering shaft outa the way for entrance. Ill gladly listen to advice from guys that have been there, and done that! EXSPURTS??? Sure hope i dont hafta lift the motor back up for a fit! yesterday, the starter had to come off in mid air to clear the frame; OK. Then it had to come apart (take the solenoid off) to go back in. Its all back in, but that was kinda unfair of the Buick Gods' to pull that one. The heater core was necessary due to a leak; but this?? ws
Bill: Suggest you coat the exhaust manifolds with Calyx so they won't look rusty so fast. Much easier to do now. UticaGeoff
Calyx? All I could find is an O.S. like LINUX. Hmmm. Find me some info couldja?? So now on to the manifolds.. No other input. The heats on out in the shop and Im ready to cut grass and chew gum and the grass aint green yet! An gum sticks to the store-boughts. ws
Man that driver side manifold is going to be tight. Again Bill thanks for all of the pics so the rest know what we are getting into with this swap. Have you decided yet on what your are going to use for a radiator.
Happy Birthday to Pat, Bill. Now's the time to get a starter brace on there if you have one. I would disagree with Geoff on the Calyx. It is good stuff, but I would recommend POR 15 factory manifold Grey paint. Stuff is absolute killer with a great look. Little or no prep, I mean...it's Paint Over Rust stuff. Goes on with a foam brush and lays flat. Looks great, lasts a long time, easy touch up. I run it on all my cars, I think it's less than the Calyx, too. Put it on, run the car like 15-20 mins, cool then good to go. You got to break in the cam anyways. BTW...it's different than regular POR, you can get the can open years later.
Truer words were never spoken. This could very well turn into a rant; so watch it you! Ask for advice from the exspurts, and I dont even get a copy and paste from a galaxy far, far away. So what do ya do? WANG IT! Ordered manifold gaskets today. I know the exspurts say that BMD didnt use any, but what the heck. I dont want any leaks, and after running the pipes on the belt sander, they would probably be OK, however. I'm the anal guy, so this is the way I roll. One paper with a pinch-o-spit. Being the purist that I am haha, Im going A la nuda on the pipes. Au naturale. Cleaned up the pipes and they look like new. Managed to get all the bolts in except for that long jimmy on the back of the right pipe. (Ya notice I say pipes instead of manifolds? Im getting lazy OK??). I gotta drop that one and insert the bolt before it goes into place. Also elongated the holes on the packing flanges so it 1964 at the business end. All done in 2" to the back. The pipe outlets are 2" as well so bigger aint better. The drivers side was a bear, but that bastard met Jeremiah Johnson today. OK Pilgrim?? Had to make a wrench to pull the Z bar stuff out. A Great Neck forged wrench from Taiwan. No great loss. Got that dang pipe up and hung on a few bolts when I noticed the #5 bolt was perfectly in line with the steering shaft. Kripes. Took the rag joint apart. It needed some cleaning anyway. It would not go back together for shoot. Pulled it closed with vise grips and the column flexed the fire wall. Hmm... Ended up sliding the 1/2 joint UP from the gear box 3/16" and its perfect. Weird. The #5 bolt is in with never seize, cause it aint coming out again. So now, Im gonna ask the exspurts what they prefer for gerbil insertion; GL4 or GL4-5. Went to NAPA, the box store land of experts. Game boy dont know squat. I ask him wheres the gear lube and he says "we got 5 gallon pails in the back" AYSM????? This is for a 4 speed. We walked up and down the aisles until we found a wizz poor seklection of 80-90-140 stuff. ALL GL5 except the synchromesh crap which again, is like 40W. SO WHERE DO THE EXSPURTS GET THEIRS?????? If anyone answers with a C&P from rot-auto I comin' over to cut some grass and chew some gum. The grass is still dead and gum sticks to the store boughts, so yer gettin' bit with gums! Gonna go gum some lasagna right now! ws
Crap, I must be sleeping. I see it now. I was looking at the next pic down with the solenoid shield. Then I saw the bolt with the threaded end sticking out, one of the 2 holding the case together. Typically, that's for a different type of brace, and I saw the tapped hole in front of it on the block and thought, no brace. Good work Bill, I need to pay better attention!
Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. But even more importantly, thank you for being here for Yachtsmanbill. This project will be his last big job and he has wanted this for so long. He comes in and feels guilty for "neglecting" me. Na, he is enjoying his retirement and he ain't in a bar or chasing skirts. How can I complain? I am the one who is always running.. So, thank you for taking care of him...ppat
Pulled the '64 PS pump off and got the pressure washer going and did the rugs today. just wrapping that up and the mailman shows up with another package from my benefactor, Mr. Kingfish... Thanks George!! The biggies on this package were way less than dyno time, T/A push rods, and a 800 cfm edelbrock carbonator. I got the rods and rockers all done and installed the intake. I forgot how heavy them mother flowers are, having to reach over and not waste the tin gasket and RTV. Felpro sent a tube with which of course was enough for 3/4 of the job. Hope its no runs, no leaks, no errors. Taking off momentarily for the other guy with 455 engines in the barn for a 455 PS pump... ws
Nice job on the PS pump. Just hafta make up hoses. Belts lined up nice! Got some custom valve cover spreaders, and a chrome 710 cap. Yippee!! getting closer every day! ws
