Here's more. If anyone is interested in having there cars edited in this way, e'mail larger picture files to lacey_803@arvig.net Dave
Thanks Dave!! I like the pics...... it's something different! I really like the one with my truck in the background. It kinda looks like a Chevy Truck Commercial! I'l post more pics as I progress......... Steve
I just wanted to drop a note about my progress. Although I am a little short on cash right now because of work being slow, I was still able to pick up my race engine this past week from AM&P. This was a 3 year project that finally concluded during the Nat's. I went up to Mike's shop on Thursday evening to break in the engine and returned Friday evening for the dyno session. First let me say that Mike and his crew did a GREAT job on my engine. I'm rather particular when it comes to certain things and I can tell you that I was well satisfied! The engine is a 523 CI with Stage 2 SE heads, solid cam, an "old" Wildcat intake (that mike ported the heck out of), and an "old" 2 circuit 1050 Dominator worked over by Bigs Performance. Of course it has my SRE/Peterson oil/vacuum pump, SRE Oil Pan, Valve Covers, Pump mount, Motor plate, etc, etc. It also has a few "special tricks" that Mike tried for the first time. My original expectations were for 750-775 HP, but we exceeded that by a long shot! We made quite a few pulls at lower RPM while concentrating on the Vacuum and Oil Pressure. Once we got that figured out we started to go after some HP and Tq numbers. We ended up with 819 HP at 6500 and 711 lbft Tq at 5400. This is all tried at 32 deg's of timing! All we did to get better numbers is mess with the carb as we didn't have time to try timing, valve lash or anything else! It was getting late and we needed to wrap it up so I could load it up on Saturday and bring it home. Mike, myself and a few other feel that there was a good amount of power left in there yet, but I was ecstatic with those numbers and decided to stop there. I was never after the "highest HP Buick", just a good strong and dependable bracket engine. I'll post the dyno numbers and some pics in a few days after I get settled back into my regular routine. I would really like to give a huge "THANKS" to Mike and the entire staff at AM&P! Wonderful job guys!!! I can't wait to get the car finished for next season and start tearing up the track!!
Well, here are a few pics of the engine and a copy of one of the dyno sheets. Not sure, but I'm thinking that this thing will propel my 3000 lb GSX clone to low 9's and maybe some high 8's as there was more HP in the engine to be had. I'm still not certain of the final weight of the car..... it may be under 3000 lbs. I'm really not going after any records, just out to GO FAST and have FUN!! This should "GIT-ER-DUN"!!
Just a few more pictures. Once again, I can't say enough about Mike and crew over at AM&P. Fantastic job!! These pictures are of the engine sitting in my storage building. Hopefully in a week or two I'll drop it in the chassis and proceed from there. Man.... I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!
WOW.. Really impress by that engine!!!!Must have a different sound than my 2.3 liter 4 banger 92 ford tempo!!!!! Can you (or someone who knows about it just by checkin it out) explain to me the oiling system on it?Looks like an oil cooler?? no?? And the oil pump is driven straight from the crank???Whats all these hoses, you dont use the internal oiling gallery?? Or do you used it + the extra external ones??? Really look like a BBB thats gonna kick some ass!!! You had the GS455, now here comes the GS500!!!!!!When its done, try posting a video of it running on youtube!
Thanks Marc, It's real simple actually. It utilizes an external Oil Pump/Vacuum Pump combination. It simply bypasses the internal oil pump system and all of the sharp corners and small passages associated with it. It pumps from the pan, through a filter back into the engine (front and rear) and gravity feeds back to the pan. The other lines you see are for the vacuum pump. They pull vacuum from each valve cover, through the vacuum portion of the pump and into a catch can. On several test pulls we disconnected the vacuum pump and noted a "gross" 32 HP loss without the vacuum. I say gross loss because there are several things that come into play with this, but either way 32 HP is significant. Thanks again guys! Steve
A few pictures of recent progress. Electrical is 80% complete. Engine is sitting in place, but needs a ton more fabrication on things like MSD crank trigger mount, relocating pump/etc to clear tie rod and inner tie rod ends, oil lines, filter and catch can mounts, etc, etc. I just keep chiseling away at it. After looking at the progress that Smartin has accomplished with that '58, I'm "re-motivated"!!! Steve
That is one wicked ride! If it does need some fabrication work to get done, it is sitting in the right guy's garage. Real nice work but that does not surprise me from what I have seen before.
Steve, looks great. Hey, one the front of the car, are those real headlights? or dummys, and if so, what did you use?
Thanks guys!! The headlights are stickers that I bought from Jegs. They are intended to be stuck on a flat disc. I didn't like the look of that so I made up some .065 aluminum discs with a radius that is similar to a standard headlight. It gives it a much more realistic look. They are bolted on with one 1/4" bolt through the center into a mount that I welded on. It's a lot of extra work vs a flat disc, but it's mostly just time..... and since I have more time than money right now, there's a lot of little things that will be getting extra attention. Thanks!!
As promised....... more pictures. Not a lot of "big ticket items" added, but a lot of small, time consuming things out of the way. Steve
It's still fun to check stuff off,No matter how little the item. Definately will be one that needs to be seen in person,Can't wait.
